About the role

We are seeking a highly organised and proactive Credit Controller who is responsible for managing the Building Consultancy sales ledger and maximising cash collection across the business.

Working closely with Partners, Directors and fee earners, the role will proactively manage outstanding debt, resolve payment issues and develop positive working relationships with client finance teams to improve the speed and certainty of payment.

Whilst the primary focus is effective credit control, the role will also highlight recurring billing issues that contribute to payment delays and work with operational teams to help minimise them where practical.

What matters most in this role

Work closely with Partners, Directors and fee earners by:

  • Providing updates on significant outstanding debts.
  • Highlighting payment risks.
  • Assisting with collection strategies for key accounts.
  • Identifying recurring invoice issues that delay payment.
  • Liaising with Finance to resolve billing queries.

The role is expected to support the business in improving cash collection, rather than owning the wider billing process.

Day to day, you’ll

  • Manage the Building Consultancy sales ledger.
  • Monitor aged debt and prioritise collection activity.
  • Proactively pursue outstanding invoices through telephone, email and client engagement.
  • Resolve invoice and payment queries promptly.
  • Maintain accurate records of collection activity.
  • Escalate significant issues to Partners and Directors where appropriate.
  • Produce regular aged debt reports and commentary.
  • Support monthly cash collection targets.

Client Relationships

Develop professional working relationships with Accounts Payable teams and finance contacts within key client organisations.

  • Responsibilities include:
  • Acting as the primary contact for payment queries.
  • Understanding client payment processes.
  • Resolving issues collaboratively.
  • Supporting positive relationships between clients and Building Consultancy teams.
  • Helping remove barriers to prompt payment.

What we expect of you

  • Proven experience in a Credit Control or Accounts Receivable role, ideally within construction, property, or professional services
  • Understanding of project-based billing and fee structures (desirable)
  • Experience working with finance systems and ERP platforms.
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills
  • Ability to build relationships with both finance and non-finance stakeholders
  • High level of attention to detail and accuracy
  • Proficiency in accounting systems and MS Excel
  • Ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines

Why Workman?

  • Hybrid working to offer you a great work life balance, with a minimum of three days in the office.
  • Core working hours to allow for added flexibility and helps ease your commute to the office.
  • Study support (where applicable)
  • Discretionary annual bonus and salary reviews.
  • Healthcare, life insurance & wellness programme.
  • Long service additional holidays, your birthday off and an extra day between Christmas and New Year.
  • Lifestyle benefits to suit you: gym membership, cycle to work, buy and sell holiday to name just a few.
  • Social events throughout the year including a firm wide Christmas party!
  • Generous referral bonus.
