Job Description:

Technical Assurance Engineer

We are recruiting for a Technical Assurance Engineer to join the HS2 Track Infrastructure project during its initial design phase. This phase will run concurrently with the completion of the Main Works Contracts, which are currently at peak delivery. The role will form part of a collaborative Rail Systems Alliance, established to manage interfaces, coordinate activities and resolve programme challenges across the project. Working closely with alliance partners, the Technical Assurance Engineer will support the integration of design, access, resources and logistics to help achieve shared objectives for safety, cost, quality and schedule.

Key responsibilities

The Technical Assurance Engineer will be responsible for coordinating and delivering technical assurance activities, driving the resolution of assurance-related issues and supporting the delivery of a progressively self-assured product. The role will contribute to the ongoing development and enhancement of technical assurance processes and systems, ensuring lessons learned are captured and used to improve future performance and delivery.

  • Apply the processes and procedures defined within the FBRS Requirements and Assurance Management Plan (RAMP) to support the delivery of technical self-assurance across each HS2 Technical Lifecycle Stage.
  • Support the maintenance of the Contractor’s Technical Requirements Baseline, ensuring all input requirements are captured and managed in accordance with the Works Information, applicable standards and statutory obligations.
  • Assist with the identification, decomposition and management of new and existing requirements, supporting the development of system and subsystem requirements throughout the design lifecycle.
  • Support the development and management of system and subsystem requirements as part of design development and assurance activities.
  • Ensure robust engineering, verification and validation (V&V) processes are applied to generate assurance evidence that demonstrates compliance with project requirements and stakeholder expectations.
  • Support the progressive development and submission of assurance evidence throughout the project lifecycle, helping to mitigate approval risks and maintain programme commitments.
  • Assist with the preparation, tracking and reporting of assured deliverables, certifications and assurance activities to support programme delivery.
  • Support assessments of Technical Assurance readiness for interdisciplinary design reviews and project lifecycle stage gates.
  • Assist in the preparation and presentation of assurance documentation and stage gate packs for Level 3 lifecycle stage gate FBRS/HS2 acceptance panels.
  • Participate in regular assurance reviews, monitoring progress and supporting the timely resolution of technical assurance issues.

Key Skills and qualifications

  • Degree-qualified in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or membership of a relevant professional institution (e.g. IMechE, ICE or equivalent) is desirable.
  • Experience working on major multidisciplinary rail infrastructure projects; experience on high-speed rail, design and build, and UK-based projects would be advantageous.
  • Previous experience in a similar technical assurance, systems engineering or requirements management role with comparable responsibilities.
  • Proficient in Requirements Management
  • Proficient in IBM Rational DOORS
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proactive team player, able to listen, engage and contribute positively within a complex project environment.
