Job Description

As Global Sustainability Manager, you will play a pivotal role in embedding sustainability across our operations, products, supply chain and decision-making processes. Reporting to the Head of HSE & Sustainability, you will lead key programmes spanning ESG reporting, decarbonisation, environmental compliance, and responsible business practices.

A major focus of this position will be ensuring compliance with global product environmental regulations and driving robust restricted substance management programmes across the organisation.

Key Responsibilities

Sustainability Strategy & Governance:

  • Support and co-own the development and execution of Smiths Detection's global Sustainability and ESG Strategy.
  • Translate strategic objectives into actionable roadmaps, targets and KPIs.
  • Lead implementation of actions arising from our Double Materiality Assessment and Restricted Substances Assessment.
  • Develop governance frameworks, policies and controls that embed sustainability into business decision-making.

Restricted Substance Compliance & Product Stewardship

Lead company-wide compliance activities relating to:

  • REACH
  • RoHS
  • SCIP
  • Conflict Minerals
  • Emerging product environmental legislation

What you will be doing:

  • Own restricted substance management processes and ensure robust controls across the business.
  • Partner with Engineering, Procurement, Quality and Supply Chain teams to ensure ongoing product compliance and market access.
  • Manage supplier declarations, material disclosures and environmental data collection.
  • Monitor legislative developments and assess business impacts, risks and compliance requirements.
  • Provide expert guidance to internal stakeholders on product environmental compliance obligations.

ESG Reporting & Environmental Performance

Lead and support external ESG disclosures and reporting activities, including:

  • CDP
  • TCFD
  • CSRD
  • ISSB

Including:

  • Drive improvements in ESG data quality, systems and assurance processes.
  • Oversee carbon accounting activities in line with the GHG Protocol.
  • Support science-based target setting and decarbonisation initiatives across Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.
  • Deliver programmes focused on energy efficiency, waste reduction and water management.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Partner with Operations, Engineering, Finance, HR, Procurement and Supply Chain teams globally.
  • Support supplier sustainability and responsible sourcing initiatives.
  • Engage with customers, regulators and industry groups on sustainability and compliance matters.
  • Prepare reporting and updates for senior leadership teams.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Sustainability, Environmental Science, Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Proven experience in a sustainability, ESG, product stewardship or environmental compliance role within an industrial, manufacturing, engineering or technology environment.
  • Strong hands-on expertise in Restricted Substance Compliance, including REACH and RoHS regulations.
  • Demonstrable experience managing product environmental compliance programmes and supplier material declarations.
  • Experience with SCIP submissions, Conflict Minerals reporting and related regulatory requirements.
  • Strong understanding of global sustainability regulations and emerging compliance obligations.
  • Expertise in ESG frameworks and reporting standards including GHG Protocol, CDP, TCFD, CSRD and ISSB.
  • Experience in carbon accounting and sustainability data management.
  • Strong project management and stakeholder influencing skills.
  • Experience operating within a global, matrix organisation.

Desirable

  • Lifecycle Assessment (LCA) experience.
  • Sustainable product design knowledge.
  • Customer-facing sustainability experience.
  • Professional certification such as IEMA Practitioner, Lead Auditor or ISO 14001 qualification.
