Midweight Designer

We are looking for a talented, thoughtful and hands-on Midweight Designer to join our commercial creative team at Midori House in Marylebone. Working under the direction of our Creative Director and Commercial Art Director, you will produce distinctive and beautifully executed work for globally recognised partners who share our commitment to quality, innovation and thoughtful communication.

Working across Monocle and our sister title, Konfekt, you will help to create commercial campaigns spanning print, digital, social media and live experiences. One day you might be developing layouts for a new print partnership and on the next day, you could be adapting a campaign across several digital formats or preparing final artwork for production.

The challenge is finding the point at which a partner’s objectives, Monocle’s distinctive visual identity and the interests of our audience come together.

What you’ll be doing

You will take ownership of allocated design projects, contributing ideas and developing creative work from the initial brief through to final artwork and delivery. This will include creating concepts and layouts, selecting and working with imagery, adapting designs across different formats and ensuring that every detail is accurate and beautifully resolved.

You will collaborate with colleagues across commercial, design, editorial, photography, production and project management teams, contributing ideas during briefings and creative reviews, and helping to ensure that every element of a campaign feels cohesive, considered and unmistakably Monocle.

This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys designing every day. You will need to balance several projects and deadlines, respond constructively to feedback and changing priorities, and maintain excellent creative and technical standards when the pace picks up. You will also support the Commercial Art Director with creative proposals and presentations, occasionally contributing to client conversations where appropriate.

About you

You will be a skilled graphic designer with at least three years of professional experience, ideally gained within a creative agency, publishing, media or commercial brand environment. Your portfolio will demonstrate original and excellently executed work across print and digital, together with a strong understanding of typography, layout, brand identity and visual storytelling.

You will be comfortable developing work from an initial brief and early ideas through to the final artwork. You will know how to interpret creative direction, apply feedback thoughtfully and produce work that balances Monocle’s design standards with the objectives, audiences and practical requirements of our commercial partners.

You will also bring

  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop
  • Excellent typography, layout and image-selection skills
  • Experience preparing accurate final artwork for print and digital delivery
  • A good understanding of print production and creative workflows
  • Experience adapting creative work consistently across different platforms and formats
  • The ability to manage several projects without losing sight of the details
  • A genuine interest in design, culture and contemporary visual communication
  • An appreciation of Monocle’s visual identity, editorial standards and international outlook
  • A collaborative, resourceful and solutions-focused approach
  • Experience delivering commercial campaigns, branded content or integrated creative projects would be valuable
  • Motion-design skills and familiarity with After Effects or similar tools would also be desirable, though not essential

Why Monocle?

Since launching in London in 2007, Monocle has grown from an independent magazine into an international media brand encompassing print, digital, a round-the-clock radio station, books, newsletters, events, shops, e-commerce and cafés. Our commercial partnerships are equally varied. We work with ambitious organisations around the world to create campaigns that are intelligent, original and artfully produced, rather than work that simply looks or feels like conventional advertising.

You will join a team of curious, creative and international people who care deeply about ideas, design and quality. It is an opportunity to develop thoughtful creative work across a wide range of subjects and formats while building a strong understanding of brands, audiences and the commercial side of an independent global media business.

The details

This is a full-time position based at Midori House, Marylebone. Our working hours are 09.30 to 18.30 and the role is based in the office five days a week. Some travel might be required depending on the needs of individual projects. Benefits include discounts at The Monocle Shop and Café; breakfast five days a week; health, dental and life insurance; 23 days of annual leave; a seven-day Christmas shutdown and eight bank holidays; as well as a dog-friendly office. Please note that all applicants must have the right to work in the UK.

If you are a talented designer who enjoys turning ideas into beautifully crafted work while balancing creative ambition with commercial objectives, we would love to hear from you.

To apply, please send us your CV and portfolio, together with a short note explaining why you would like to join Monocle.
