The latest milestone in our journey has been the approval of the Group Data Strategy, Target Operating Model and Roadmap.We are at the very beginning of an exciting journey to set up our Group Data Function to implement our Data Strategy and turn our Data and Analytics capabilities into true growth enablers. One of the key parts of our Group Data Function is the Data and Analytics Centre of Excellence (CoE) with responsibility to define our frameworks, select the appropriate tools and support our Data and Analytics professionals within the Business Unit Data Teams and Group Function Data Team to successfully adopt and implement our group standards.Our Data Strategy is based on 7 principles:Distributed data ownershipData as a productDemocratise Data & Analytics Innovate While Building the FoundationsInstill Controlled AutonomyPromote Agility

The RoleThe Group Head of Data Management is a critical leadership position in the Data and Analytics CoE and the wider data and analytics team. They will play a significant role in creating a value focused Group Data Function with overall responsibility for the below. Insurance experience is key for this position:

  • Developing Data Management frameworks for Data Governance, Data Quality, Data Cataloguing, Reference Data Management, Metadata Management and Master Data Management.
  • Leading the evaluation and selection of the appropriate Data Management tooling
  • Guiding and supporting the BU Data Teams and The Group Functions Data Team to successfully adopt the Data Management frameworks and tools.
  • Clearly communicating and promoting the value of data management practices at the most senior levels to ensure buy-in and support.
  • Actively fostering the creation of a strong data culture within the data community and the wider business community across Hiscox through inspirational communications and relentless identification and delivery of tangible business value including quick wins
  • Working with Data Management colleagues at Group level and within the BUs to embed ownership and accountability for data within the business
  • Owning Hiscox Data Management strategy, frameworks and tooling roadmap.
  • Evolving governance processes, maintaining data domains, ensuring consistency, and promoting best practices.
     

Candidate profileWe seek an accomplished leader who knows what good looks like, has successfully set up and led Data Management teams ideally from scratch in an insurance organisation, has a strategic mindset with a highly pragmatic approach to identifying and delivering business value through good data management practices.Experience of a matrix management environment is essential.The ideal candidate will be a proven change agent who brings leadership, drive and a successful track record of delivering capability uplift within data management and the broader organisation.The successful candidate will possess the following competencies & characteristics:

  • Data Management Leadership: The successful candidate will be an experienced data management leader, someone who has been where we are going. They must have significant demonstrable experience in senior data management positions and have successfully established data management capabilities in a global and federated environment including:
    • Setting standards for Data Governance, Data Quality, Data Cataloguing, Reference Data Management, Metadata Management and Master Data Management.
    • Selection and roll out of data management tools.
    • Driving adoption of the data management frameworks, tools and ways of working across multiple business units, data teams and data platforms with varying strategic needs and levels of maturity
    • Developing and implementing plans for growing the maturity of the data management capabilities incrementally
    • Enhancing data literacy and strengthening data culture through incremental and value focused approaches

  • Strategic Delivery: The candidate must have ability for setting medium to long term strategic agenda – in close collaboration with the Business and Data leaders – combined with clear focus on delivering tangible incremental results within a complex, global and rapidly transforming business. The ideal candidate has the ability, determination and tenacity to prioritise and move major initiatives forward, injecting pace and focus, removing blockers while consistently thinking of the bottom-line impact of the efforts.

  • Highly Collaborative Change Agent: Hiscox’s culture requires a highly collaborative approach to change delivery. The successful candidate will be able to break down internal organisational siloes, work collaboratively across Business Units and Functions and constantly balance conflicting demands (supply vs. demand, innovation vs. cost control, stability vs. flexibility, centralisation vs. federation…) in a transparent manner. The candidate must have evidence of strong ability to deliver change through people.

  • Strong Communication and Influencing Skills: The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills. Technically credible in front of the data teams, peers and Execs, able to flex their style to the needs of the audience and distil complexity with ease. Operating in a matrix environment with a mix of solid and dotted reporting lines, the successful candidate will have the proven ability to use informal structures, dynamics and organizational culture to get things done. Actively seeking input in decision making and engaging stakeholders to get to the optimal outcome for the Group must come naturally to them and they must have the ability to make difficult and/or unpopular decisions, backed by strong rationale.
