About the FP&A Team

With multiple tax jurisdictions, geographies, regulators, carriers, quota share partners and ILS third party investors, Hiscox Re & ILS is a complex and interesting division of the Hiscox Group. We are looking for an FP&A Analyst to work with the Head of FP&A in London, working closely with the rest of the Finance function and the wider RE & ILS business to produce integrated plans and subsequent analyses. The successful applicant will produce detailed budgets and plans on a regular basis, while monitoring and providing insights on all financial reporting. In addition, you will support the Director of Underwriting in London in running their book by using financial data to provide insights that support both tactical and strategic decisions.

An incredible opportunity

We’re looking for a critical thinker, who naturally enjoys working with data and logic. Success will be measured by production of detailed forecasts alongside ability to explain variance in the context of performance. The role will provide a fantastic opportunity for someone looking to have a tangible impact on running a dynamic business which comprises a world class reinsurance business alongside an asset management business. Exposure to the executive team will be a key aspect and opportunity.

What you’ll be doing

  • Producing 3-year detailed plans and quarterly reforecasts; monitoring actual performance against these
  • Shaping and monitoring Key Performance Indicators, identifying variances and trends
  • Modelling and evaluating short and long-term scenarios
  • Working with the portfolio optimisation team, modelling team and capital team to understand various underwriting sensitivities including profit contribution, impact from rating environment, impact from loss activities to articulate risks and opportunities
  • Supporting the underwriting team with insight into their lines and ad hoc analyses; fielding ad-hoc requests from the Executive team on topics across RE & ILS
  • Providing commentary and insight on monthly results against prior year and plan for board meetings, executive meetings, and investor/partner presentations
  • Representing RE & ILS at the Group FP&A level

The Winning Candidate

We’re looking for someone who has a passion for asking great questions, and the technical skills and attention to detail to answer them. You will need to be articulate, exhibit good judgement and be able to quickly analyse and solve problems. Ability to build rapport with colleagues is crucial, as is the ability to clearly communicate findings.

Our must haves:

  • (Re)insurance industry knowledge
  • Good analytical skills with strong attention to detail
  • Prior experience working in a data-rich environment
  • Clear vision of where and how finance adds value to a business. Intuitive sense for good commercial decisions – seen equally as a business person and a finance professional.
  • An enquiring mind: a willingness to get under the skin of the numbers and question why they look as they do, to fully understand what is driving performance
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to prioritise own workload and meet deadlines
  • An open and collaborative style with the ability to translate complex subject matter to senior colleagues with clarity
  • Advanced Microsoft skills, primarily Excel and PowerPoint

Our nice to haves:-

  • University degree from accredited institution or equivalent
  • Full/part accountancy, actuarial or similar qualification
  • Experience with data visualisation software (Tableau/PowerBI)
  • Experience with Oracle Reporting and SQL

Diversity & Hybrid Working
At Hiscox we care about our people. We hire the best people for the job and we’re committed to diversity and creating a truly inclusive culture, which we believe drives success.
We have also learned that working life doesn’t always have to be in the office, so we have introduced hybrid working to encourage a healthy work life balance.

This hybrid working model is set by the team rather than the business to enable you to manage your own personal work-life balance. We see it as the best of both worlds; structure and sociability on one hand, and independence and flexibility on the other.
