JOB DESCRIPTION:

Exploring Natural Sweetening Solutions in Medical Nutrition Products

Project Description
Abbott Nutrition develops and produces medical nutrition products consumed by some of the most vulnerable populations worldwide. These products must not only provide optimal nutrition but also deliver consistent and pleasant sensory experiences. This internship focuses on exploring natural sweetening solutions for medical nutrition products, aiming to balance taste, functionality, and consumer preferences. You will evaluate various sweetening options, analyze their impact on product quality, and assess sensory performance and acceptance.

Project Goals

  • Identify suitable natural sweetening options for medical nutrition products.

  • Optimize integration of these sweeteners into product formulations.

  • Assess sensory and consumer acceptance through structured evaluations.

  • Deliver a comprehensive report with theoretical insights and recommendations for future product development.

Project Approach

The project combines:

  • Desk Research: Literature review and regulatory analysis.

  • Formulation Trials: Prototyping and testing different sweetening solutions.

  • Sensory Evaluations: Conduct hedonic and descriptive tests to measure acceptance and performance.

You will collaborate with cross-functional teams and external partners, conduct experiments, and analyze data to support product development.

Preferred Background

  • Master’s students in Food Technology or Nutrition & Health (WUR or similar programs).

  • Sensory science background and interest in product tasting and evaluation are preferred.

Student Program at Abbott

At Abbott, you will receive guidance from two mentors:

  • Content Supervisor : Provides subject-matter expertise from your department.

  • Process Supervisor: Helps manage your project using a structured management tool.

We primarily use the DMAIC methodology, but if your academic program requires a different approach, we can adapt. Your project will include five formal approval checkpoints with your supervisors to ensure effective management and progress tracking. With two supervisors, you will learn to manage stakeholders, apply project management principles, and monitor progress effectively.

Additionally:

  • Weekly student meetings foster collaboration, knowledge sharing, and networking among interns.

  • You will never be alone—Abbott ensures a supportive and engaging internship experience!
