The company

Small businesses move fast. Opportunities often don’t wait, and cash flow pressures can appear overnight. To keep going, and growing, SMEs need finance that’s as flexible and responsive as they are.

That's why we built iwoca. Our smart technology, data science and five-star customer service ensures business owners can act with the speed, confidence and control they need, exactly when it's needed.

We’ve already cleared the way for 100,000 businesses with more than £4 billion in funding. Our passionate team is driven to help even more SMEs succeed, through access to better finance and other services that make running a business easier. Our ultimate mission is to support one million SMEs in their defining moments, creating lasting impact for the communities and economies they drive.

The team

This is an opportunity to build your career in communications at a fast-growing fintech that's reshaping SME finance. You'll be part of iwoca's external communications team, helping drive coverage across our expanding product portfolio, working on data-led campaigns and supporting our work with government and policymakers.

Our comms function works across the business to position iwoca as a leading voice in SME finance. You'll collaborate closely with Product, Commercial, and Executive teams to translate business priorities into compelling narratives that drive both brand awareness and customer acquisition.

The role

We're looking for a Communications Executive with up to two years' experience to join our UK comms team. Working alongside the team, you'll help publish our major data-driven campaigns, own the communications for a couple of our newest products, and support our public affairs and policy work. You'll also help with the BAU media activities that keep iwoca front-of-mind with key journalists and stakeholders.

Examples of the type of work you'll be doing:

1. Support data-driven PR campaigns

Working with the team, you'll run several established data-driven campaigns:

  • Top 25 UK Cities for SME Jobs: Our annual ranking combines ONS employment data, business figures, and economic indicators. You can refine the methodology if needed, analyse the latest data, and craft narratives for regional and national media.

  • SME survey research: Twice a year you'll help commission original survey research, working with established research partners to design questionnaires capturing timely SME sentiment. You'll help ensure we generate "business news" coverage that responds to real economic issues.

  • You'll be comfortable working with raw datasets - not just presenting finished analysis. Spotting surprising findings, identifying regional variations, understanding which angles interest journalists versus policymakers.

2. Start shouting about our new products

You'll eventually own the communications for a couple of iwoca's newest products, working directly with Venture Leads to drive awareness and customer acquisition. Here are a few we've just launched that you could be working on:

  • Credit Compass: Our credit-building tool helping SMEs improve their scores. You'll identify customer success stories, translate credit score trends into compelling narratives, and position this as iwoca's answer to the credit access gap.

  • SME Insurance: Help launch this proposition to market - identifying angles around why SMEs need this product and announce new strategic partners as and when we secure them.

  • iwoca Credit Card: You'll be involved from the ground up - understanding competitive positioning, identifying what's newsworthy in a crowded market, building a launch campaign that breaks through.

  • iwocaPay (launched in 2020): Our instant payment solution - you'll help scale awareness as this product continues to grow, finding ongoing news hooks beyond what we've already done in recent years.

  • For each product, you'll get under the hood with the Venture Leads - understanding commercial objectives, customer pain points, competitive landscape - then translating that into comms plans that drive both coverage and business outcomes. You'll own two products, with the split decided once you're in the job.

3. Support our public affairs and policy work

iwoca works with government and policymakers to make the case for better access to finance for small businesses. You'll support this work, engaging with relevant government departments, industry bodies and ministers where relevant. This could include:

  • Tracking policy and regulatory developments that affect SMEs and SME lending.

  • Helping draft consultation responses, policy briefings and position papers.

  • Using our lending and survey data to build the evidence behind our policy positions.

  • Preparing briefing materials for meetings with officials, industry bodies and ministers.

The requirements

Essential:

  • Up to two years' experience in communications, PR, public affairs, policy, journalism or a related field. Internships and placements count, and we welcome recent graduates.

  • Excellent writing skills with the ability to craft data-driven stories, press releases, briefing materials, and media pitches that cut through.

  • Ability to work at pace across multiple projects simultaneously, with strong organisational skills.

  • You'll need to be confident managing and analysing data with either Excel or Google Sheets.

  • A genuine interest in the economy, policy and politics, and how they affect small businesses.

Bonus:

  • Some experience in, or a strong interest in, tech, fintech, financial services or B2B technology.

  • Experience in public affairs, policy or government relations, or an understanding of how policy is made.

  • Any exposure to product launches or translating complex propositions into accessible narratives.

  • Experience pitching to journalists or securing coverage in relevant press.

  • Comfortable working with senior stakeholders.

  • Commercial awareness and understanding of what drives media coverage in fintech and SME finance.

  • Familiarity with media monitoring tools (e.g., Signal AI, Cision) and ability to analyse coverage data to inform strategy.

The culture

At iwoca, we prioritise a culture of learning, growth, and support, and invest in the development of our team members. We value thought and skill diversity, and encourage people to explore new areas of interest, adopt better tools – including AI – and apply sound judgement so our products and decisions improve over time.

The offices

We put a lot of effort into making iwoca a great place to work:

  • Offices in London, Leeds, Berlin, and Frankfurt with plenty of drinks and snacks.

  • Events and community-led groups, including running groups, padel, and monthly ping-pong and pool competitions.

The benefits

  • Flexible working hours.

  • Medical insurance from Vitality, including discounted gym membership.

  • A choice between a dedicated dental plan or a health cash plan that reimburses everyday medical expenses.

  • A private GP service (separate from Vitality) for you, your partner, and your dependents.

  • 25 days’ holiday per year, an extra day off for your birthday, the option to buy or sell an additional five days of annual leave, and unlimited unpaid leave.

  • A one-month, fully paid sabbatical after four years.

  • Instant access to external counselling and therapy sessions for team members that need emotional or mental health support.

  • 3% Pension contributions on total earnings.

  • An employee equity incentive scheme.

  • Generous parental leave and a nursery tax benefit scheme to help you save money.

  • Electric car scheme and cycle to work scheme.

  • Two company retreats a year: we’ve been to France, Italy, Spain, and further afield.

And to make sure we all keep learning, we offer:

  • A learning and development budget for everyone.

  • Company-wide talks with internal and external speakers.

  • Access to learning platforms like Treehouse.
