Technical Lead

Location: Hybrid - Borehamwood

Package: Negotiable + Benefits

1 year Fixed Term Contract

Brown & Brown Europe is building long-lived, product-led squads with end-to-end ownership of the services they create. You will work in a collaborative engineering environment that values practical delivery, automation, security, quality, learning and continuous improvement.

The day to day:

You will lead technical delivery within a product-led squad, combining hands-on engineering with day-to-day technical leadership. You will partner closely with Product and Delivery, while the Lead Engineer provides broader cross-squad engineering leadership.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead technical design and delivery for the squad while remaining hands-on.
  • Turn product priorities into secure, scalable and supportable technical solutions.
  • Guide estimation, decomposition, dependencies and pragmatic technical decisions.
  • Own technical delivery from discovery through release and live support.
  • Set expectations for code quality, automated testing, security, documentation, observability and operational readiness.
  • Improve CI/CD pipelines and deployment practices to enable safe, repeatable releases.
  • Champion peer review, pairing, test-first thinking, small releases and continuous refactoring.
  • Coach engineers through reviews, pairing and knowledge sharing.
  • Make technical debt, risks and operational issues visible and lead proportionate action.
  • Use DORA, quality and service measures to drive improvement.
  • Collaborate with Architecture, Cloud, Security and platform teams within agreed guardrails.
  • Support incident investigation and turn learning into preventative improvements.

How we work:

  • Work in a long-lived, product-led and stream-aligned squad with clear service ownership.
  • Follow a Build and Run model: design, build, test, deploy, monitor, support and improve squad-owned services.
  • Use a transparent, prioritised backlog and deliver value incrementally through a regular agile cadence.
  • Take part in planning, refinement, daily collaboration, reviews, retrospectives, demos and showcases.
  • Use Definition of Ready and Definition of Done, including testing, security, documentation and operational readiness.
  • Automate build, test, security assurance, deployment and repeatable environment activity wherever practical.
  • Release in small, safe increments and use feedback and delivery data to improve.
  • Work within shared architecture, cloud, security and platform guardrails.
  • Use approved engineering and AI-assisted tools with appropriate security controls and human review.

Our technology environment:

  • Frontend: React, JavaScript/TypeScript and component-based UI development.
  • Backend: .NET, C#, APIs, Entity Framework Core, services and integrations.
  • Cloud: Microsoft Azure, monitoring and platform guardrails.
  • Tooling: Azure DevOps, Git, backlogs, CI/CD and deployment automation.
  • Practices: Automated testing, peer review, secure coding, pairing, test-first thinking and continuous refactoring.

About you:

  • Strong software engineering experience, with technical leadership experience in an agile team.
  • Advanced full-stack capability using .NET and modern web technologies.
  • Experience designing, building and supporting Azure-hosted services.
  • Strong CI/CD, automated testing, version control and DevOps knowledge.
  • Sound judgement across APIs, integrations, data, resilience, security and maintainability.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and communicating technical trade-offs clearly.
  • Build and Run experience, including production support and service improvement.

How this role is distinct:

  • Leads technical delivery within one squad.
  • The Lead Engineer sits above this role and provides cross-squad leadership.
  • Combines leadership with meaningful hands-on engineering.

The rewards:

  • A negotiable basic salary and all the usual benefits you would expect, including holiday and a company pension.
  • A collaborative, open and honest environment designed to deliver the best outcomes for our clients and teammates.
  • A flexible working
  • An environment built around supporting and developing our teammates, with funding available for relevant professional qualifications.
