Job Description:

System Safety Design Engineer

We are now recruiting for a System Safety Design Engineer to join the HS2 Track infrastructure project at the initial design phase which will run concurrently with the completion of main works contracts, which are now at their peak. The team operate under a collaborative Rail Systems Alliance structure, designed to manage interfaces and resolve any program conflicts. The members will work together on design, access, resources, and logistics to achieve shared goals for cost and schedule.


Key responsibilities

The System Safety Design Engineer works with the Designers, Client and Others to ensure the delivery of system safety compliance, risk analysis and evaluation, preparation of safety products, and under direction and control of the Lead Systems Safety Engineer.

The System Safety Support Engineer takes an active role in the Employer’s system safety team, supporting the system safety lead and ensuring compliance with the Employer’s processes set out in the Employer’s Phase 1/2a Railway Systems Safety Management Plan.

  • Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment: Work with Designer’s System safety engineers analyse of systems to identify potential hazards, assess the likelihood and severity of risks, and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Safety Requirements Definition: aid the definition safety requirements for the system and its components, ensuring these requirements are integrated into the design and development process.
  • Safety Case Development: aid the development of safety cases, which are arguments supported by evidence, to demonstrate that a system meets safety requirements and is acceptably safe for its intended use.
  • Safety Analysis: aid various safety analyses, such as Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA), to evaluate safety performance and identify potential issues.
  • Collaboration and Communication: work closely with systems, hardware, and software engineers, as well as other stakeholders, to ensure safety is integrated into the system's design and operation.
  • Compliance and Auditing: support compliance with relevant safety standards and regulations and participate in audits to verify the effectiveness of safety measures.
  • Incident Investigation: participate in incident investigations to identify root causes and contribute to corrective actions.
  • Reporting: report to the lead systems safety engineer

Key Skills and qualifications
  • Technical Expertise: A strong understanding of engineering principles, safety standards, and hazard analysis techniques.
  • Problem-Solving and Analytical Skills: The ability to identify hazards, assess risks, and develop effective solutions.
  • Communication Skills: The ability to communicate complex safety information clearly and concisely to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Collaboration and Teamwork: The ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and manage stakeholder expectations.
  • Experience: Experience in a safety engineering role, preferably within the rail industry.
  • Education: A degree in engineering or a related field, with further qualifications in safety engineering considered advantageous.
