We’re looking for a Software Engineering Manager to play a pivotal role in leading and evolving M&S’s digital fulfilment platforms. This team provides the critical software capabilities that power fulfilment operations across the business from in-store fulfilment and order collection to dropship supplier and carrier integrations.

Your “customers” are product teams, engineers, and operational stakeholders and your mission is to make them faster, more effective, and more confident through high-performing teams, scalable systems, and excellent engineering practices.

This is a role for a leader who is excited by enabling teams at scale, driving engineering excellence, and transforming how complex operational systems are designed, delivered, and run across a large organisation.

About the Team

Our engineering teams enable product, engineering, and operational teams to build and deliver solutions with speed and confidence. We create reliable, scalable, and intuitive platforms, rooted in strong engineering standards, automation, and continuous improvement.

You will join the Online Software Engineering team, leading the modernisation of critical fulfilment technologies, including:

  • In-store fulfilment systems
  • Store order collection platforms
  • Dropship supplier integrations
  • Carrier and logistics integrations
  • Platform tooling, automation, and DevOps enablement

What You'll Do

Your key accountabilities will include:

  • Build, mentor, and lead high-performing software engineering teams, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, ownership, and continuous improvement.
  • Oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of complex software initiatives, ensuring alignment with business objectives, timelines, budgets, and quality expectations.
  • Work closely with product management, design, programme management, and operational stakeholders to define scope, shape roadmaps, and deliver impactful business outcomes.
  • Provide strong technical leadership, guiding architecture, design decisions, and engineering best practices across fulfilment systems and platforms.
  • Drive the adoption of modern software engineering standards, tools, and methodologies to improve software quality, developer experience, and delivery efficiency.
  • Ensure operational excellence by embedding DevOps principles and maintaining reliable, scalable, secure, and well-supported production systems.

·

Who You Are

  • A strong engineering leader with a passion for building, developing, and empowering high-performing software engineering teams.
  • Previously a hands-on senior software engineer with experience across a broad range of technologies, platforms, and architectural patterns.
  • Experienced in delivering highly scalable backend systems, ideally within Java-based environments.
  • Extensive software engineering experience across multiple technologies, frameworks, and delivery environments.
  • Strong understanding of system design, software architecture, cloud platforms, and modern engineering best practices.

What’s in it for you

Being a part of M&S is exactly that – playing your part to bring the magic of M&S to our customers every day. We’re an inclusive, dynamic, exciting, and ever evolving business built on doing the right thing and bringing exceptional quality, value, service to every customer, whenever, wherever and however they want to shop with us.

Here are some of the benefits we offer that make working for M&S just that little bit more special…

  • After completing your probationary period, you’ll receive 20% colleague discount across all M&S products and many of our third-party brands for you and a member of your household.
  • Competitive holiday entitlement with the potential to buy extra holiday days!
  • Discretionary bonus schemes awarded based on how you achieve your personal objectives and our performance as a business.
  • A generous Defined Contribution Pension Scheme and Life Assurance.
  • A dedicated welcome to our teams with a tailored induction and a wide range of training programmes to develop your skills.
  • Amazing perks and discounts via our M&S Choices portal to maximise your financial and personal wellbeing.
  • Industry-leading parental, adoption and neonatal policies, providing support and flexibility for your family.
  • Access to a fantastic range of wellbeing support for all colleagues including access to our 24/7 Virtual GP and PAM Assist to support you and your family.
  • A charity volunteer day to support a charity or cause you're passionate about through a dedicated day away from work.

Everyone’s Welcome

We are ambitious about the future of retail. We’re disrupting, innovating, and leading the industry into a more conscientious, inspiring digital era. We’re transforming how we work together and offering our most exciting opportunities yet. Marks & Spencer strives to be an inclusive organisation, trusted and admired by our colleagues, customers, and suppliers.

We are committed to building diverse and representative teams, where everyone can bring their whole selves to work and be at their best. We support each other and win together.
