Lead engineering transformation for a financial services client by improving engineering health, automating Salesforce regression testing, enabling CI/CD and cloud-native deployments, and advancing developer experience. Responsibilities include removing delivery blockers, scaling automated testing, promoting trunk-based development, feature flags and blue-green deployments, and establishing safe practices for AI-assisted coding and production releases. The role requires influencing multiple engineering teams and stakeholders without formal authority.

About Us:

ClearRoute is an engineering consultancy bridging Quality Engineering, Cloud Platforms and Developer Experience. We help enterprises reliably bring high-impact digital products to market faster, cheaper, and safer, working with technology leaders facing complex business challenges.

We take as much pride in our people, culture and work-life balance as we do in making better software. We’re not just making better software. We’re making the making of software better. Collaborative, entrepreneurial and dedicated to problem solving, we bring the step change our customer need to sustain innovation. Our values challenge us to do the best we can for ClearRoute, our customers and most importantly our team. This is an opportunity for you to build the organisation from the ground up, use your voice to drive change and help transform organisations and problem domains.

Role:

We’re looking for a senior, hands-on engineering leader to help a major financial services client transform the way its engineering teams build, test and deploy software. You’ll have strong executive sponsorship and the authority to unblock teams, influence engineering strategy and drive change across multiple feature teams.

The focus is simple: make engineering faster, safer and more effective — particularly around automated testing, CI/CD, developer experience and AI-assisted development. You’ll be working at the intersection of engineering leadership, platform engineering and modern software delivery, with the opportunity to shape how teams work at scale.

Key Responsibilities:

Drive the Engineering Health Plan

  • Assess, estimate and prioritise the engineering improvement backlog.

  • Break the work down across multiple feature teams.

  • Spend around 20% of your time directly driving the health plan and tracking progress.

  • Identify blockers and work with senior stakeholders to get them removed.

  • Influence engineering teams without relying on formal authority.

Transform Testing

  • Take a large-scale Salesforce regression testing process from around three weeks of manual testing to a matter of hours through automation.

  • Identify and resolve bottlenecks in existing test suites.

  • Establish scalable approaches to automated testing and regression.

  • Help teams build testing into their development lifecycle rather than treating it as a final-stage activity.

Enable Continuous Delivery

  • Help engineering teams move towards true automated deployment and CI/CD.

  • Enable engineers to safely deploy to production at the push of a button.

  • Champion trunk-based development, feature flags and blue-green deployment strategies.

  • Work across AWS, containers and modern cloud-native engineering practices.

  • Improve the overall developer experience and engineering flow.

Shape AI-Assisted Engineering

The engineering teams are already using Claude to support software development. You’ll help review and evolve their approach, including:

  • How AI coding tools are integrated into the developer workflow.

  • IDE and tooling choices, including tools such as VS Code, IntelliJ, Cursor, Windsurf and Roo.

  • Model selection and usage patterns.

  • Agent/toolchain configuration.

  • Engineering controls required to safely take AI-generated code into production.

Required Experience:

  • Trunk-based development

  • CI/CD and automated deployment

  • Feature flags and blue-green deployments

  • TDD and BDD

  • Pair programming and collaborative engineering

  • Automated testing and test strategy

  • Code review and engineering quality

  • Cloud-native engineering, ideally AWS

  • Containers and modern deployment practices

  • AI-assisted software development

  • Safely deploying AI-generated code into production

We're particularly interested in people who can demonstrate that they've taken a broken, slow or overly manual engineering process and materially improved it at scale.

Desirable Experience:

  • Salesforce testing and automation.

  • Financial services or other highly regulated environments.

  • Modernising legacy technology estates, including mainframe or Hadoop/Teradata environments.

  • Anthropic/Claude or other AI coding platforms.

  • Setting up developer experience platforms spanning IDE + AI model + agent/tooling.

  • Platform engineering across developer experience, cloud, automated testing and security.

  • Large-scale engineering transformation or developer productivity initiatives.
