Senior Platform Engineer

Platform Engineering plays a critical role in enabling delivery teams to build, deploy and operate systems safely, reliably and efficiently. This role focuses on building and evolving shared cloud platform capabilities, tooling and automation that underpin digital and data services across the organisation. 

We are in the middle of a significant cloud maturity and modernisation journey, moving toward a fully cloud native estate. That means you won't just be maintaining existing systems, you'll be designing paved paths, platform re-design and influencing architectural direction across Barnett-Waddingham

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Platform Engineer to make a real impact on a modern cloud platform as it scales, delivering new capabilities whilst shaping the standards and frameworks that will underpin future engineering. This is a hybrid role and can be based at either of our London, Amersham or Cheltenham offices.

You'll be joining a team that treats platforms as products, focusing on reliability, scalability and secure by design delivery rather than just infra maintenance. You’ll be part of a collaborative environment where platform engineering is viewed as a strategic capability, not a support function, giving you the chance to work on meaningful technical challenges while shaping the long-term direction of the organisation’s cloud platforms

Responsibilities

• Building scalable, secure cloud foundations rather than one-off solutions
• Automating wherever possible
• Working on complex, high-impact platforms
• Having architectural influence, not just operational responsibility
• Working with technologies such as Azure, Kubernetes, serverless architecture, IaC, CI/CD pipelines and observability tooling
• Contributing to highly automated and event-driven environments. 
• Provide platform and DevOps expertise, including infrastructure as code, environment provisioning, configuration and deployment automation.  
• Embed DevSecOps & FinOps principles into platform tooling, workflows ensuring security, governance and compliance are built in by default.  
• We would love to hear from if you have: 
• Proven experience operating at Senior level in Platform Engineering, DevOps, or Cloud Engineering roles within enterprise environmentsExperience of working in an agile team environment. 
• Strong, hands-on experience designing and operating Azure cloud platforms at scale. 
• Deep experience with Infrastructure as Code and automation-first delivery (Terraform essential) 
• Strong understanding of modern DevOps practices, including CI/CD, environment automation, and platform enablement. 
• Experience working closely with delivery teams using Agile and Lean principles 
• Ability to influence technical direction and collaborate effectively with senior engineers, architects, and stakeholders. 
• Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) and or Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD) 
• HashiCorp Terraform Associate certification  
• Microsoft Azure DevOps Engineer Expert and/or Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect Expert 
• Strong experience with Kubernetes and container orchestration in production environments
