The role

What will you be doing?

At Unum UK, our Legal team is a trusted partner to the business, providing advice that supports innovation, protects our customers and ensures we comply with our legal responsibilities.

What will you bring?

We’re looking for an experienced, qualified Solicitor (England & Wales) with strong insurance expertise to join us as a Senior Legal Counsel. This is a key role where you’ll be empowered to influence decision making, lead on complex matters and support the business in delivering great outcomes.

What you’ll be doing
In this role you will be working closely with stakeholders across the organisation and leading on a wide range of legal activity.

You Will:
•    Provide expert advice across all areas of insurance including,  products, policy wordings, claims, distribution, underwriting and reinsurance. 
•    Draft and negotiate commercial contracts, including broker agreements and supplier arrangements as required.
•    Support product development and strategic business initiatives.
•    Advise on regulatory frameworks (FCA/PRA).
•    Advise on data protection, competition and emerging legal issues affecting the insurance sector. 
•    Provide legal training to the business as well as review and maintain legal frameworks and policies.
•    Advise on and manage contentious legal matters. 
•    Act as a trusted partner to all levels of stakeholder across the business. 
•    Support and mentor more junior colleagues.

What we’re looking for

Essential:

•    Solicitor qualified in England and Wales with proven, strong experience within the insurance sector.
•    Strong understanding of FCA and PRA regulatory frameworks.
•    Proven experience drafting and negotiating complex commercial agreements.
•    Demonstrated ability to balance legal risk with commercial pragmatism.
•    Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
•    Highly professional behaviour.
•    Significant experience in group risk insurance products and general insurance products.
•    Strong knowledge and technical understanding of insurance law and the group risk market including reinsurance.
•    Excellent verbal and written English.
•    Good organisation, presentation and communication skills.
