Senior Engineering Manager – Cloud Networking
Overview
“We operate at scale - billions of transactions, a global hybrid-cloud footprint, and the kind of network challenges that simply don’t exist in smaller environments. If you care about reliability, automation, and making infrastructure disappear so product teams can focus on customers, this is the place.”
Why Join Us
“This role sits at the intersection of deep technical networking and genuine people leadership. You’ll own the roadmap, shape how we build our hybrid-cloud network, and grow a team that raises the bar for automation and operational excellence. If you believe a reliable, well-engineered network is the foundation that accelerates delivery across an entire organisation, let's talk.” Hiring Manager, Cloud Platform
What You’ll Do
- Lead and grow the team. Hire, mentor, and develop a team of cloud network engineers. Foster a culture of ownership, technical rigor, and continuous improvement.
- Own engineering delivery. Plan, prioritise, execute, and communicate progress on cloud networking initiatives to stakeholders across the business.
- Drive the technical roadmap. Shape Mimecast’s hybrid-cloud network architecture through design, deployment, capacity planning, and performance tuning.
- Be the escalation point. Serve as the senior technical escalation for complex network incidents and architectural decisions within the Cloud Networking team.
- Collaborate cross-functionally. Work with Architecture, Security, Platform, and Product Engineering teams to define network requirements and align on organisational objectives.
- Champion automation. Set the standard for infrastructure-as-code practices. Ensure the team builds scalable, intelligent, and repeatable network automation solutions.
- Manage people operations. Hiring, onboarding, performance management, career development, and retention.
- Establish engineering processes. Build and refine operational runbooks, reliability practices, and engineering processes to support a production-first culture.
- Represent the team. Participate in cross-functional leadership forums and contribute to broader engineering strategy.
- Own vendor and budget management. Manage commercial relationships for networking hardware, software, and services - including procurement, licence renewals, vendor performance evaluation, budgeting, forecasting, and cost optimisation.
What You’ll Bring
- Significant experience managing or leading engineering teams operating large-scale production and hybrid-cloud network environments.
- Solid understanding of advanced networking: routing, switching, firewalls, and load balancers at scale.
- Strong technical grounding in AWS networking services in large distributed production environments - Direct Connect, Transit Gateway, VPCs, ALB/NLB, auto-scaling groups, security groups, RAM, IAM.
- Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform, with the judgement to set standards for their use across the team.
- Demonstrated ability to hire, develop, and retain strong engineering talent.
- Track record of delivering complex infrastructure projects on time, managing trade-offs between reliability, velocity, and cost.
- Outstanding communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to translate technical complexity for non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience managing engineering budgets and vendor relationships, including procurement, contract negotiation, and cost-benefit analysis for networking infrastructure and tooling.
- Relevant degree or equivalent experience. Networking certifications (JNCIA, CCNA, AWS Advanced Networking) or equivalent depth of knowledge are a plus.
What Sets You Apart
- You have led teams through significant networking transformation projects.
- You combine hands-on technical credibility with a genuine focus on people leadership and team health.
- You are passionate about NetDevOps and stay current with emerging technologies in cloud networking and automation.
- You have a relentless focus on customer outcomes. Every network decision is measured against its impact on performance and the end-user experience. You see the network as an enabler, delivering the platform that engineering teams need to ship product faster.

The team’s purpose is to deliver a platform so reliable, performant, and well-abstracted that Product and Engineering teams across Mimecast can ship faster and deliver more for customers. Day to day, you’ll split your time between people leadership and technical leadership. You’ll work closely with peer engineering managers in Cloud Platform and with architects and security teams across the organisation. The expectation is hands-on technical credibility combined with a genuine focus on team health and individual growth.
