Introducing the Trainline Data Science & Analytics Team 👋
Data Science & Analytics (DSA) sits at the heart of how Trainline understands and improves the end-to-end customer journey, from finding a journey through to booking. Our data scientists and analysts work closely together to support supply, search and commerce, spotting patterns that affect the customer experience, identifying opportunities for our customers and our business, and building solutions that make life easier for the wider team.
This role offers the chance to work across multiple areas of the business rather than being confined to a single specialism, giving you real breadth and the opportunity to see how different parts of the customer journey connect.
As a Senior Data Scientist, you will take ownership of investigations and solutions that span search, supply and commerce, working with detailed datasets and linking data sources to support projects across pillars. You will collaborate closely with all teams responsible for core customer experiences (from Data, Product, Engineering, Commercial), own problems and their solution end to end, challenge the status quo and help shape how the wider team approaches recurring problems and opportunities.
This is a role for someone who enjoys getting into the detail, thrives on variety, and wants to have a tangible impact on how customers experience Trainline.
In this role as the Senior Data Scientist, you will... 🚄

• Work across search, supply and commerce, bringing together diverse datasets to tackle complex problems and deliver projects that span multiple pillars.

• Identify opportunities for our customers and our business, using data to shape solutions and building tools and approaches that make the wider team more effective.

• Develop a deep understanding of the customer experience, getting to the root causes of recurring problems (such as conversion declines, checkout errors or searches returning no results) and working cross-functionally to turn insights into lasting improvements.

• Drive continuous improvement by identifying recurring patterns and turning what you learn into reusable tools, frameworks and solutions that reduce investigation time and help the wider team move faster.

• Surface product and commercial opportunities through your analysis, connecting insights to business context and bringing opportunities to the right teams timely to drive action.

• Mentor and guide colleagues across Data and partner teams, helping others build their analytical capability and confidence.

• Partner closely with data scientists, data analysts and cross-functional teams across search, supply, commerce to solve problems that cut across organisational boundaries.

• Navigate competing priorities across multiple areas of the business, bringing structure, clarity and sound judgement to fast-moving and ambiguous situations.

We'd love to hear from you if you have... 🔎

• Substantial experience as a Data Scientist at a senior level, with the confidence, judgement and autonomy that come from having operated at this level before.

• Track record of owning a business or functional area end to end, taking responsibility for identifying opportunities, shaping the analytical approach and driving outcomes - not just delivering analysis.

• Experience working across multiple business areas or domains, navigating competing priorities and adapting your approach to different problems, stakeholders and contexts.

• A strong track record of delivering measurable business impact through product analytics, translating data and insights into decisions and actions that improve customer and business outcomes.

• Strong SQL and Python skills, used confidently to explore, analyse and draw actionable insights from complex datasets, alongside good engineering practices such as version control and effective use of AI tools to work more efficiently.

• Confidence working with large, unfamiliar and diverse datasets, bringing together multiple data sources to build a robust and comprehensive understanding of a problem.

• Experience mentoring and supporting other Data Scientists, helping colleagues develop their technical skills, analytical thinking and approach to problem-solving.

• Ideally, experience in a technology-driven, digital or marketplace business, although this is not essential.
