Are you passionate about data and ready to make a real impact?

We’re looking for an SAS Data Engineer to join the small but dynamic team in SAS Data Engineering that is responsible for maintaining and updating regulatory models in the production environment and providing a trusted operational run service to deliver critical data for month-end reporting, whilst ensuring the quality of the data that underpins these models.

Ahead lies the rewarding challenge of integrating Virgin Money data into these established processes and working with Retail Credit Risk to develop Group models upon successful integration, as well as the opportunity to participate in other key data-related projects.

Combining accountabilities for delivery, continuous improvement, and automation, this role will provide the opportunity to work on our new cloud warehouse as part of the SAS estate along with some cutting-edge technologies, industry leading vendors, and help shape and drive the next phase of the strategy execution.

SAS Data Engineering is part of Data and Functions Technology Delivery (DFTD), which provides value by delivering data of the highest standards to consumers across the society, using the best technology for the task and ever-improving Governance and Controls to do so. This means using various technologies to deliver, control, and govern the data that we deliver to stakeholders, both internally and externally.

This is a 12-month Fixed Term opportunity.

At Nationwide we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected.

For this role, you'll be based at your nearest regional office or hub. We value time spent together to connect with colleagues for collaboration so there will be a regular requirement to attend our Swindon site approximately quarterly. If you are based at an office location, you'll be expected to meet our hybrid working requirement of at least two days a week, or 40% of your working time if part-time, in the office. If your application is successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this works.

If we receive a high volume of relevant applications, we may close the advert earlier than the advertised date, so please apply as soon as you can.

Responsibilities

What you’ll be doing

You’ll liaise with Credit Risk stakeholders to deliver on-time important changes to production code on the SAS cloud platform (SAS Viya) using controlled and governed processes that meet critical and regulatory requirements, and which are subject to internal and external audit.

In addition, you will have shared responsibility for running time-critical regulatory models each month in the production environment, whilst also running and maintaining data quality processes against key data items to ensure the integrity of the data underpinning these models. You will use Service Now for incident management.

You will also have the opportunity in the future to participate in strategic data-related projects such as Virgin Money Integration.

About you

As a minimum you will bring:

  • Demonstrable SAS coding experience, including the use of SAS macros, ideally having worked with large sets of data from a variety of sources

  • A capability to work in a regulated and audited environment whilst producing quality documentation that adheres to defined standards

  • Awareness of the importance of data governance, data lineage, and data quality

  • A curious mindset and ability to demonstrate a drive for continuous improvement

  • Evidence of being a strong team player who enjoys and thrives on collaboration with colleagues within and across teams from different business functions, who can also work independently when required

  • Good stakeholder management, communication, and influencing skills

Our customer first behaviours put customers and members at the heart of how we work together. They are the set of behaviours that every colleague needs to display, in every role:

  • Feel what customers feel - We step into our customers’ shoes, using their feedback and insights to empathise with them and to understand their needs, so that every decision we make starts and finishes with our customers in mind

  • Say it straight - We are brave in speaking out and saying what we think – we’re honest and direct with good intent, openly sharing diverse perspectives to reach the best conclusions and using language everyone can understand

  • Push for better - We don’t settle for mediocrity, we challenge the status quo, taking responsibility for continuous improvement and personal development

  • Get it done - We prioritise what will have the greatest impact, we are decisive, and we take accountability for delivering brilliant customer outcomes

You can strengthen your application by showing how our customer first behaviours resonate with you, and where you may have already demonstrated these.
