We are looking for a talented Product Engineering Specialist to join our team specializing in Engineering for our Meritor – Sustaining Department in Cwmbran, United Kingdom.
In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:
- Drive high‑quality product development by executing established technical work at the sub‑system and component level across multiple stages of the product life cycle.
- Act as a central point of coordination between product line engineers, systems teams, customer teams, purchasing, suppliers, and manufacturing to enable informed, timely decisions.
- Translate stakeholder input into clear technical recommendations that support sound design, test, and project execution decisions.
- Apply engineering knowledge and experience to progress projects efficiently while maintaining quality, safety, and performance standards.
- Lead and improve the application of engineering processes and tools such as ESW, iDFMEA, FIRG, 7‑step problem solving, and design review checklists to strengthen decision‑making.
- Independently own components, systems, or smaller business‑impact projects, managing ambiguity with full accountability to project teams.
- Develop, execute, and continuously improve work processes and systems within the functional discipline to enhance team effectiveness.
- Provide technical guidance and coordination to technicians, students, and less‑experienced engineers, supporting capability building and knowledge transfer.
To be successful in this role you will need the following:
- Strong capability in designing and applying open‑ and closed‑loop control systems, with a solid understanding of how software interacts with mechanical, hydraulic, chemical, and electronic systems.
- Experience with product configuration and change management, including maintaining controlled baselines and managing changes throughout the full product life cycle.
- In‑depth mechanical systems knowledge, enabling the creation of robust, innovative designs that meet Cummins and customer requirements across varied operating environments.
- Proficiency in creating complete mechanical design specifications, including solid models, engineering bills of materials, and detailed drawings aligned with applicable standards.
Education/ Experience:
- Prior Senior or Lead Engineer equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving and quality decision making.
- Mechanical Engineering Degree or equivalence
- Advanced experience in design, development and/or project engineering experience, preferably in an automotive environment
- Have a working knowledge of CAD, preferably Pro-Engineer Creo 2
- Have practical experience of test methodology and test procedures
- Understand manufacturing methods and processes
- Understand complex mechanisms and structures
- Understand materials and stress/strain theory & FE Analysis
- Be familiar with latest engineering methods
- Excellent communication, presentation & report writing skills
- Be able to work effectively within a team environment
- Ability to speak a foreign language would be an advantage
- Technical Expertise: A solid foundation in design and manufacturing, vehicle dynamics, and braking systems, along with knowledge of FEA techniques and CAD tools.
