JOB TITLE: Process Engineering Intern 

This Intern/Industrial Placement Student position is for a fixed term of 12 months.

DEPARTMENT:  Process Engineering, OSA Prototype Lab, Components R&D, Cloud and Networking Platform (CNP).

RESPONSIBLE FOR: Assembly of prototype and pre-alpha devices within the CNP R&D department based in Caswell, the UK.

SUMMARY OF JOB FUNCTION:

Knowledgeable engineer with general understanding of Optical and Telecoms fundamentals, knowledge of semiconductor device assembly methods and principles, data analysis and interpretation is required to join the transmission components R&D OSA Prototype Team.

The team charter is “Assembly and test of prototype and pre-alpha devices/assemblies to support OSA TDP and PDP activities, research and development of associated processes and assembly equipment”.

You will be part of this hard-working and diverse team that is responsible for the development and improvement of the manufacturing processes and tests used to produce our most highly integrated telecom products. You will help develop the next generation of opto-electronic and photonic components at optical sub-assembly (OSA) level such as high-performance transmitter and receiver devices for use in optical communication systems. This gives you an excellent opportunity to learn about the broad range of disciplines involved in our technology and product development process (TDP/PDP).

IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL (Key Responsibilities but not limited to):

  • Perform assembly tasks associated with building devices/assemblies related to prototype and pre-alpha optical sub-assemblies.
    • Likely to include utilising processes such as diebond, wirebond, optical alignment, hermetic sealing, optical inspection, destructive mechanical testing.
    • Will be required to utilise both automated and manual process equipment.
  • Plan and execute engineering trials aimed at evaluating new processes and materials
    • Work with design teams to specify critical aspects of the build
    • Identify key parameters for analysis
    • Perform data analysis
    • Compile and publish reports stating key conclusions
  • Undertake failure analysis on sub assemblies utilising techniques such as
    • Shear/pull test and other destructive mechanical testing
    • Cross sectioning
    • Optical and x-ray inspection and other non-destructive inspection techniques
  • Analyze and interpret data to show the trend of the impact of key parameters, understand the failure mechanisms and generate product yield report in a timely manner.
  • Work with chip and OSA design teams to understand key factors that affect prototype process and tests, yield, and performance, and use tools and techniques to develop an experimental plan to study them.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

QUALIFICATIONS:

An undergraduate/bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Electrical and/or Electronic Engineering, Physics (Optics/Photonics), RF/Optical Engineering, Communications, or equivalent engineering/science discipline and have an interest in the optical communications field.

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS:

Essential:

  • Willingness to learn, develop your skills and expand your knowledge.
  • Engineering background with sound understanding of the fundamentals of optical/electronic/photonic/RF components and their applications.
  • High level of manual dexterity is required, including the ability to use fine tools to manipulate small components and perform complex tasks.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Offices packages including Word and Excel to provide reports to development teams
  • Practical experience of measurement techniques, data correlation and results analysis.
  • Ability to perform basic statistical analysis using JMP/Excel or other tools.
  • Demonstrate that you can work within a team environment.

 Desirable:

  • Knowledge of optical component performance and characterization
  • Experience on Manufacturing and/or Industrial engineering.
  • Experience with project management skills; able to prioritize and deliver against a schedule, while interacting with distributed R&D teams

PERSONAL REQUIREMENTS:

The candidate will have to demonstrate that they are capable working within an international team environment.   must be self-motivated and have proven practical experience in completing given tasks and demonstrate attention to details. Their technical background and hands-on skills will enable them to integrate quickly into an existing development team. The candidate must demonstrate strong inter-personal communication skills.

MISCELLANEOUS:

Flexible hours / shift working may be required at times of high demand.

Occasional travel to other Lumentum sites worldwide may be required.
