Process Control Engineer (m/f/d)

Objective of the role:

The Process Control Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and optimizing the process control systems that ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operation of a biogas upgrading and CO₂ recovery plant. This role involves developing control philosophies, participate selecting instrumentation, support programming automation systems, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver robust plant functionality from concept through commissioning and operation.

The Process Control Engineer ensures quality and timely completion of the engineering together with the project team. The Process Control Engineer reports to the Team Leader Process Engineering Biogas in Venlo.

Main reponsibilities:

  • Design solutions & order execution: Develop functional descriptions (control loops, blocks, and sequence diagrams) including range and setpoints as well as cause & effect lists for plants based on the product portfolio and new products. Implementation of the controls in compliance with laws and standards, with the required implementation regulations at the place of installation of the plant; creation of solutions considering functional, material, EHS and economic aspects as well as evaluating and comparing them with existing designs; FAT test of PLC program; support for commissioning engineers at site including tuning and coordination of control loops.
  • Implementation and Optimization: Support programming, testing, and commissioning of control systems, including logic development, loop tuning, and alarm management. Optimize plant performance by implementing advanced process control strategies and continuous improvement initiatives. Troubleshoot control system issues and implement solutions to improve reliability, efficiency, and product quality.
  • Communication & exchange of information: Exchange of information with the other teams and specialist departments as well as suppliers (e.g., alignment of design with mechanical engineering & automation, field assembly and commissioning); internal and external representation of the project; internal reporting; documentation of agreements reached.
  • Documentation, Compliance & risk assessments: Preparation of the operating (and maintenance) instructions; customer process descriptions; create functional descriptions and operation manuals; supporting hazard analyses for individual machines as well as for the interlinked complete plant. Participate in risk assessments, HAZOP, and SIL studies to ensure process safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Contributing technical knowledge to other departments and projects in the role of a subject matter expert incl. Provide process control and functionality trainings for (new) colleagues (engineers, project leaders, and sales)

Qualifications & competencies:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical, Electrical, or Automation Engineering, or a related field.
  • Extensive experience in process control engineering, preferably in gas processing, chemical, or energy industries.
  • Experience in industrial control systems with knowledge in HMI/SCADA system design, familiarity with tools like Process Engineering Software, Process Control Software & Programming Language (Siemens TIA Portal).
  • Minimum of 6+ years’ expertise in designing and commissioning control systems for complex process plants, preferable experience with biogas upgrading, CO₂ capture, or cryogenic liquefaction processes.
  • Ability to lead virtual teams and deliver results in a functional/project organization without direct reports and interact with stakeholders at all levels of the organization. Demonstrated leadership, project management, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Strong knowledge of process instrumentation, safety systems, and relevant codes and standards.
  • Excellent command on English is mandatory, additional European language skills are a plus.
  • Independent, proactive, flexible, determined, and resilient to stress.
  • Team-player who enjoys working closely with others and thrives in a team environment.
  • Creative in finding solutions, with a strong commitment to quality.
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and problem-solving abilities. Analytical and able to maintain an overview of complex processes.
  • Willingness to work internationally and travel 15%.
