IONATE is a deep tech scale-up building the hardware and software backbone for smart grids. Our mission is to transform power systems – from grids and microgrids to renewables and datacentres – unlocking the massive potential in this under-innovated sector that touches every aspect of our modern lives.

We are now looking for a Power Electronics Engineer to join our Power Electronics team. Requiring knowledge and experience in electronics development and design, you will play a key role in the development, design, implementation and testing of electronics circuits and systems, taking concepts and prototypes through to commercial products.

With a focus on grid-connected inverter design, you will be actively contributing to analyses, design reviews, simulations, technical discussions, verification and validation processes.  Importantly, you will be contributing to live, ongoing projects and test activities, as well and closely working with the team to continue developing our HIT technology.

What you will do:
  • Contribute to the development of high-power converters and controllers for grid-connected applications.
  • Design, simulate, implement, test, verify and troubleshoot electronic hardware, circuitry and components used for power converters, controllers and auxiliary hardware.
  • Develop high-reliability PCB assemblies, suitable for high-volume production.
  • Contribute to build and test efforts, including electrical panel assemblies, wiring looms, soldering, and PCB rework.
  • Actively participate in technical development and testing across a multi-disciplinary team including power electronics designers, mechanical engineers, control & software engineers.
  • Be involved hands-on with hardware design and validation respecting safety, quality, and international standards, whilst working to clear timelines.
  • Work to clear timescales and collaborate with a cross-functional team to deliver projects on time, with ambitious product targets.
  • Create and maintain documentation such as requirements, design descriptions, testing plans and testing reports.

Requirements
  • Degree in Electrical and Electronics engineering or equivalent
  • Experience in electronics design, ideally in high power applications
  • Good understanding of electronic and electrical components and their principles
  • Good understanding of signal processing and passive/active filter designs

Design, Modelling & Simulation

  • Experience in electronics circuit modelling and simulation.
  • Experience using tools including SPICE, Altium, MATLAB.

Testing & Validation

  • Experience conducting laboratory and site-based testing using test equipment such as oscilloscopes, power supplies, load banks etc.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Communication skills enabling you to work with various teams across the globe.
  • Willingness to travel nationally and internationally when required for testing/commissioning (up 10% annually)
  • A drive to learn new things!

It would be useful to have:
  • Experience in power electronics converters (AC/DC, DC/AC, DC/DC)
  • Design experience for low noise, mixed signal systems.
  • An understanding of best practices related to thermomechanical design.
  • Experience designing systems to meet EMC/EMI standards and testing commercially ready systems for UL/TUV certification.
  • Testing experience working with voltages up to 1kV.
  • Experience designing systems fit for large scale manufacturing and production.

Benefits
  • Employee Option Plan: You get equity in IONATE, so as we succeed so do you.
  • Private Medical & Dental Insurance: From day one, we provide you with full, comprehensive private medical and dental cover through Bupa. You also have the option to add any dependents to your cover. Please ask us for more details.
  • Company pension: a flexible, and sustainable pension product to help you plan for your future.
  • Career Development: It’s important to us that you have the opportunity for ongoing professional development and career growth. You will receive an annual budget for professional development and work with your team to set and reach goals every year.
  • Flexible working schedules: You will have the flexibility for work-from-home arrangements. Talk to us at the application stage about this.
  • Cycle to Work Scheme: Low carbon travel is important for everyone, so we have in place a cycle scheme to help you purchase a bicycle.
  • Slow travel: We believe in a low carbon future, so if you wish to travel by a lower carbon method – but it takes much longer than flying - we will give you an extra 2 slow travel days per year.
