Job Description

Primary role purpose:

The satellite industry is undergoing unprecedented changes as new entrants and technological advances fundamentally transform the market. To stay at the forefront of this fast-changing landscape, the Strategy and Growth Programmes team leads the charge for International Government in developing and executing strategies and plans that keep Viasat competitive in our markets today and into the future.

One such initiative is the Chorus product portfolio, through which the International Government seeks to expand its satellite communications business in the global aeronautical market segment. We are looking to provide a scalable and flexible beyond-line-of-sight communication solution for regional operations to disseminate mission system data in real-time from airborne platforms to key end-users. The programme is expected to deliver a compelling platform-based solution for this segment backed by a comprehensive go-to-market and capture strategy.

The role of Programme PMO is to support the Programme Management Team including:

  • Tracking status of programme deliverables and milestones
  • Supporting the adoption of the project lifecycle and deliverables
  • Programme level risk and issue co-ordination
  • Monitoring the status of projects transitioning into normal service
  • Coordination of the regular project and programme-level reporting cycles
  • Co-ordination of project governance arrangements

Additional responsibilities include assisting the Programme Manager with maintaining the project management processes, standards and governance, assisting Project Managers on large projects, and co-ordinating activities in support of quality objectives.

At times the PMO Analyst may be asked to provide project support; when this is the case, this will include, amongst other things:

  • Ensuring project plans and project documentation are complete and up-to-date
  • Provide regular project status updates

Main Activities and Responsibilities

Responsibilities for supporting the Programme include:

Governance & Control

  • Implement governance standards across the programme, including tracking, monitoring, and updating the status of programme deliverables.
  • Manage programme-level Lessons Learned repository; attend Project Review meetings to identify key areas of improvement to be captured into the Lessons Learned repository.
  • Manage the programme-level risk and issue registers.
  • Assist the Programme Manager in tracking and managing programme dependencies.
  • Carry out assurance review processes as required by the Programme Manager, and ensure all projects comply with programme management standards.
  • Proactively identify and address communication challenges and conflicts.

Planning, Reporting & Control

  • Ensure project plans are created and maintained, and deliverables tracked against time.
  • Update and administer the project plans as required using reports from Workstream Leads and the outcomes of project meetings and workshops.
  • Facilitate meetings and workshops to ensure effective communication and information flow, and take / track key actions and outputs.
  • Prepare consolidated material from project reports for monthly review.
  • Organise workshops to identify areas of improvement for projects, documenting recommendations and presenting them to the Programme Manager
  • Continue to evolve processes and templates throughout the project lifecycle.

PMO Analyst responsibilities when providing project support include:

Project Management

  • Assisting Project Managers on streams of other large projects
  • Co-ordination of publication, review and sign-off of major Project Management deliverables
  • Ensuring project plans are created and maintained, deliverables tracked against time
  • Ensuring programme resources are completing timesheets
  • Managing project risks, issues and change control, communicating the impact to the project

Qualifications

Person Specification

Education, Qualifications and Training

Essential:

  • Degree or equivalent
  • Formal PM certification: can be Prince2, Agile, or other PM-specific qualification

Experience

Essential:

  • Experience of programme co-ordination / administration
  • Experience of managing small projects, or exposure to the end-to-end project lifecycle, or managing substantial parts of the project lifecycle
  • Experience of working within a structured project management framework
  • Knowledge of project management tools and techniques
  • Highly organised, detail oriented and self-motivated
  • Able to work with remote teams, including US and Australia
  • Prefer previous experience with Satellite Communications (SATCOM) roles in a Satellite service provider company

Work Based Competencies

  • Knowledge and experience of Microsoft packages:

  • Strong communications skills, both written and verbal
