About the FCA and team

We regulate financial services firms in the UK, to keep financial markets fair, thriving and effective. By joining us, you’ll play a key part in protecting consumers, driving economic growth and shaping the future of financial services in the UK.

SPC oversees firms and individuals (supervision), creates and reviews the rules by which they operate (policy) and identifies and remedies ineffective competition in markets (competition). The Retail Banking Market Intervention Department supervises retail banks and mortgage intermediaries, working to identify and address risks that could lead to poor consumer outcomes. We work closely with firms, industry stakeholders and colleagues across the FCA to ensure standards are maintained and consumers are treated fairly.

You'll join a portfolio team responsible for supervising a diverse range of mortgage intermediary firms and networks. The sector is changing as firms respond to Consumer Duty, evolving customer needs and wider economic pressures. You'll assess emerging risks, engage directly with firms, and help develop supervisory approaches that improve outcomes for consumers. The role offers exposure to a wide variety of business models, senior industry stakeholders and high-profile regulatory issues.

Role responsibilities

  • Assess firms’ business models, strategies and performance to identify risks that could affect consumers, firms or the wider market

  • Help plan and deliver supervisory work, ensuring key risks are identified, monitored and addressed at an early stage

  • Respond to firm-specific issues and market developments, using evidence and supervisory insight to inform regulatory action

  • Engage directly with firms, including senior management, to question where necessary and support improvements in customer outcomes, governance and financial resilience

  • Apply supervisory tools to gather information, test concerns and monitor firms’ progress against FCA expectations

  • Build close working relationships across the FCA, collaborating with specialist supervision, Consumer Finance, Authorisations and Enforcement teams

  • Lead or support supervisory projects, coordinating activity across teams and contributing analysis that informs regulatory decisions

  • Contribute to the wider work of the department by identifying emerging risks, sharing insight and helping improve the way we supervise firms

Skills required

Minimum:

  • Prior experience of assessing and analysing information: you will be proficient at analysing complex information and data to identify and challenge issues, making judgements that balance a range of competing factors

  • Demonstrable experience of presenting your work to others: you will need to demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively with a diverse audience and be able to present issues in a clear and digestible format

Essential:

  • A genuine interest in public service, with a good understanding of the FCA's role and objectives

  • Experience of managing competing priorities, organising workloads effectively and delivering results in a fast-paced environment

  • Sound judgement and the confidence to make informed decisions, including recognising when issues need to be escalated appropriately

  • A clear sense of ownership, taking responsibility for issues and driving practical solutions through to resolution

  • Good relationship-building skills, with the ability to work collaboratively and build trust with a range of stakeholders

  • The ability and willingness to develop technical knowledge and apply it across different areas of work

  • A flexible and pragmatic approach, with the ability to adapt to changing priorities and business needs

  • Knowledge of the regulatory framework, including relevant handbook rules and guidance, and of the retail banking and mortgage sectors, including key products, services, conduct risks and the mortgage intermediary market

Benefits

  • 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays

  • Colleagues spend a minimum of 50% of their working time in the office each month (60% for Directors and Executive Directors) across our London, Leeds and Edinburgh offices.

  • Non-contributory pension (8–12% depending on age) and life assurance at eight times your salary

  • Private healthcare with Bupa, income protection and 24/7 Employee Assistance
