Job Description:

The opportunity

We’re looking for a confident, savvy media and external communications manager who can help us run our busy press office and evolve Capita’s profile and reputation with external audiences. This role would suit someone with proven strong communications experience who is looking to develop their career in small, fast paced, friendly in-house communications team in a large, complex organisation that works with clients across the public and private sector. Creativity and a passion for storytelling are a must for this role.

Capita is a modern outsourcer, helping clients across the public and private sectors run complex business processes more efficiently. With 41,000 colleagues across eight countries, we play an integral role in society – our work is often high profile and matters to the lives of the millions of people who rely on us every day. Our approach of combining people, processes, and technology makes us uniquely placed to significantly improve the delivery of complex government and business processes at scale and to deliver better customer experiences.

What you’ll be doing

  • Managing and responding to incoming media enquiries daily, often around high profile and sometimes challenging issues, which sometimes affect individuals.
  • Be involved in issues management, liaising with divisional communications leads and our external PR agency to respond proactively and reactively to media enquiries.
  • Helping to shape and execute the external communications strategy and plan that sits within the wider Corporate Affairs strategy.
  • Creating a proactive news flow of engaging and relevant stories for both earned and owned media to help position Capita as a business that is on an exciting transformation journey.
  • Working closely with internal functions, divisions, and business units to source these news stories and updates.
  • With the wider communications team, developing and delivering content-driven, integrated communications campaigns to support Capita’s transformation narrative.
  • Building media relationships with reporters at key national and trade media outlets who cover Capita and our sectors.
  • Monitoring the sector, general business and UK political landscape to identify opportunities for us to share our viewpoints and pitch our spokespeople.

What we’re looking for:

  • Proven grounding in corporate communications, either agency or client-side, and experience of working with UK media including nationals and top trade publications.
  • Experience in public sector/ government communications desirable but not essential
  • Demonstrable knowledge of digital and social media platforms.
  • Demonstrable experience in writing and editing high-quality written content and working on integrated multi-media content packages or campaigns.
  • Sound understanding of business issues, technology trends, and current affairs.
  • Intellectually curious, analytical, and capable of exploring complex themes with the ability to communicate insights clearly and concisely.
  • Strategic mindset with a positive, energetic attitude to make things happen.
  • Highly organised, able to act on own initiative and meet deadlines.
  • Experience of working under pressure; an approach which stays calm and prioritises when needed.
  • Creative and confident in putting forward and discussing new ideas.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and constructively in a close-knit team.
  • Ability to engage effectively with and influence external stakeholders.
  • Ability to build personal credibility with senior internal executives within Capita.

What’s in it for you?

  • Competitive salary
  • 23 days’ holiday (rising to 27) with the opportunity to buy extra leave
  • Company matched pension, life assurance, a cycle2work scheme, 15 weeks’ fully paid maternity, adoption and shared parental leave, paternity pay of two weeks…and plenty more
  • Voluntary benefits designed to suit your lifestyle – from discounts on retail and socialising, to health & wellbeing, travel and technology
  • The opportunity to take a paid day out of the office, volunteering for our charity partners or a cause of your choice
  • Access to our Employee Network Groups, which represent every strand of diversity and allow colleagues to connect and learn from each other on an open, inclusive platform
  • Remote working

You’ll be joining a large network of experienced, innovative and dedicated individuals across multiple disciplines and sectors.
