Join a cutting-edge research team working to deliver on the transformation promises of modern AI. We are seeking a Manager, Research Engineering with the skills and drive to manage a top performing Engineering team focused on developing the latest in LLM and Machine Learning capabilities.
Foundational Research is the dedicated core Machine Learning research division of Thomson Reuters. We are focused on research and development, with a particular focus on advanced algorithms and training techniques for Large Language Models (LLMs).
Our focus areas are:

  • LLM Training (Continued pretraining, instruction tuning, reinforcement learning, distributed training, efficient ML techniques)
  • Post-training techniques for planning, reasoning & complex workflows (e.g., reasoning models, LLMs + knowledge graphs, test time compute, CoT pipelines, tool use & API calling, etc.)
  • Data-centric Machine Learning (Synthetic data, curriculum learning, learned data mixtures, etc.)
  • Evaluation (Benchmarking best practices, humans/LLMs as a judge, red teaming/adversarial testing, hallucination detection, etc.)

As Manager of Research Engineering, you are both a technical leader and a people manager. Key responsibilities include the technical direction of production services, close partnership with technology partners across the enterprise, and responsibility for the recruiting, career growth and mentorship of Foundational Research Engineers. Managers provide technical guidance on medium, yet complex projects in close collaboration with the research arm of Labs. This role also identifies and collaboratively advocates for the adoption of industry best practices around well-managed software delivery.

In this opportunity as Manager of Research Engineering, you will: 

  • Foster a culture of innovation, growth, and continuous improvement 
  • Own the delivery of business-critical features for high value, customer facing applications 
  • Promote efficient collaboration between scientists and engineers on a project basis   
  • Operate with urgency and manage change at a rapid pace 
  • Coach engineering leads within the team 

About You 
You're a fit for the role of Manager of Research Engineering if your background includes: 

  • A bachelor's degree in information technology, computer science, or the equivalent. Master’s or PhD in a relevant specialization preferred. 
  • Minimum of 7 years' software development experience, with minimum 3 years of demonstrated experience successfully managing software development teams in an agile environment.
  • Experience spearheading technical development in a cross-functional setting, with responsibility for ML applications; close partnership with Applied Scientists, R&D groups, or similar. 
  • A portfolio showcasing significant contributions to technology innovation 
  • Excellent project management, organization and communication skills 
  • Experience contributing to and overseeing large-scale rollouts and infrastructure initiatives. 
  • Expertise in several of the following areas: robust python development, MLOps, containerization, cloud infrastructure (AWS and Azure), advanced search and recommendation technology, orchestration of ML pipelines for real-time inference, microservices architecture, model monitoring and governance.
