The role:
The Life Performance Manager will be responsible for establishing and providing strategic leadership to a dedicated Life Performance function within the broader Investment Performance team. This function will operate as a ring-fenced centre of excellence, accountable for the delivery of comprehensive, accurate, and timely performance, attribution, and risk analytics across the full spectrum of Life funds, including With-Profits, PruFund, Unit-Linked, and Non-Profit portfolios. The role requires the development and ongoing maintenance of robust processes and controls to assure data integrity and analytical rigour, thereby underpinning all reporting outputs and the provision of actionable insights to the business.
The postholder will demonstrate subject-matter expertise in With-Profits and PruFund mechanics, experience in leading initiatives to de-risk pricing processes, enhance model governance, and deliver high-quality, auditable reporting. Strong leadership, effective stakeholder management, and a proactive approach to governance and controls are essential, as the Life Performance Manager will play a pivotal role in safeguarding performance integrity and supporting the long-term success of Life’s investment propositions. The manager will uphold onshore accountability for all performance-related deliverables, act as the principal point of contact for senior stakeholders, and ensure effective engagement through participation in relevant committees, governance forums, and regulatory interactions.
A critical aspect of this role involves managing and coordinating the seamless delivery of performance analytics in collaboration with the offshore team based in Mumbai and with third-party vendors. The Life Performance Manager will embed a “follow-the-sun” operating model, clarify roles and responsibilities, and foster a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence. In addition, the position will oversee the optimal utilisation of analytical platforms such as FactSet and maintain robust oversight of delegated or outsourced activities, ensuring alignment with UK regulatory expectations and Consumer Duty principles.
Lead Life performance BAU and controls
- Lead the London Life performance team and coordinate the offshore team of analysts; embed a “follow‑the‑sun” operating rhythm, clear roles & responsibilities, and continuous improvement; optimise use of FactSet and related platforms.
- Build out and stabilise the team to the proposed structure and embed cross‑training and cover; platform utilisation and automation.
- Own delivery of end‑to‑end performance, attribution, contribution and ex‑post risk production for Life funds and mandates), ensuring daily/monthly deadlines are delivered to, with a high level of accuracy and full auditability.
- Implement and evidence robust governance & oversight for delegated/outsourced activities (vendors, data feeds), aligned to UK expectations on oversight and Consumer Duty outcomes.
- Maintain and continually improve risk & control framework (data validation, reconciliations, issue remediation, model governance).
Stakeholder Engagement and subject‑matter expertise
- Act as onshore point of accountability for Life stakeholders; prepare and present for Oversight/Steering Committees and respond to regulatory or audit queries.
- Provide expert support on Life Performance, delivering reporting and providing insights for committee materials.
- Lead Life de‑risking workstreams (daily indicative performance, SAA/hedged benchmark calculations, operating model simplification).
Change delivery
- Prioritise and deliver the Life backlog (e.g., onboarding new ranges to the performance platform; currency‑hedged returns; daily calc frequency for With‑profits/Planet; security‑level capital/income splits; external TIM validation; Power BI dashboards).
- Involvement in developing the team’s mandate by shaping new requirements and designing solutions, whilst collaborating with Technology, Finance, T&IO and vendors.
Compliance & Standards
- Strengthen risk management capabilities, including proactive identification, assessment, and closure of risks and audit actions.
- Ensure adherence to GIPS standards and other relevant regulatory requirements (e.g., ESMA, SEC, BMR).
- Maintain documentation and audit trails for methodologies and processes.
- Uphold fair representation and full disclosure principles in all performance outputs; maintain documentation of calculation methodologies, benchmark policies and procedures.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Timely and accurate delivery of performance analytics reports (daily, monthly, quarterly).
- Reduction in manual processes through automation (target % improvement year-on-year).
- 100% proactive identification within expected timelines ,including assessments, and closure of risks and audit actions.
- Data quality metrics (error rates, reconciliation success).
- Increased Stakeholder satisfaction and feedback.
- Successful completion of audits and compliance reviews with zero material findings.
- Delivery of roadmap milestones within agreed timelines and budgets.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential:
- Subject-matter expertise in Life Funds and performance processes, covering With-profits and PruFund mechanics
- Excellent stakeholder management, and a proactive approach to governance and control
- Proven experience in investment performance measurement and attribution across multi‑asset portfolios; comfortable with daily and monthly production and complex change.
- Deep familiarity with with‑profits / smoothed funds and their reporting context (bonus, smoothing, communication to policyholders) and unit‑linked fund reporting.
- Strong grasp of governance & oversight in UK asset/insurance contexts (delegation/outsourcing oversight, committee reporting).
- Hands‑on with FactSet (B-One/PA) or equivalent performance platforms; ability to specify data/benchmark/attribution requirements and partner with managed services.
- Working knowledge of GIPS 2020 frameworks (firms/pooled funds), documentation, and disclosure expectations.
- Track record of leading small teams across onshore/offshore models; excellent stakeholder communication and committee‑facing presentation skills.
Preferred:
- Postgraduate qualification in Finance, Economics, or related field (e.g., CFA designation)
- Exposure to global operating models and offshore team management
- Experience with performance systems (e.g., FactSet, Charles River, or similar platforms)
- Familiarity with data visualisation tools (Power BI, Tableau)
