About Motorway

Motorway is the UK’s fastest-growing used car marketplace – our award winning, online-only platform connects private car sellers with over 7,500 verified dealers nationwide, who compete to offer the best price. Founded in 2017, our technology makes the process refreshingly easy, earning us an 'Excellent' Trustpilot rating with over 70,000 reviews. We're not just building a platform; we're changing how people sell cars.

Backed by leading investors like Index Ventures and ICONIQ Growth, and following a successful $190 million funding round, we're on a mission to transform the used car market.

About the role

What are we looking for? We’re looking for someone who is a real team player, proactive, willing to step out of their comfort zone, and, above all else, is keen to develop their legal career at a really exciting business, with a collaborative culture.

Who will I work with? You will report into the Director of Legal, but are also likely to work closely with the Senior Counsel and Head of Marketplace Trust. You will have direct contact with people across all teams and levels of the business, from customer service agents to the C-Suite.

What you’ll do
  • Tackle the commercial heavy lifting: You’ll get stuck into the full gamut of commercial agreements, from partnerships and marketing deals to SaaS contracts, ensuring our paperwork keeps up with our pace.

  • Support big moves: You’ll play a key role in supporting corporate transactions, giving you a front-row seat to how a major scale-up handles its business evolution.

  • Navigate the tricky stuff: You’ll support our payments function with financial regulation (FinReg) and help our employment teams navigate people matters, keeping us compliant and fair.

  • Collaborate across the board: You won’t be hidden away in an office; you’ll report to the Director of Legal and work with everyone from customer service agents right up to the C-Suite.

  • Solve problems, don't just spot them: You’ll need to think on your feet and offer proactive solutions to complex issues, rather than just pointing out the roadblocks.

Experience you’ll need to be successful
  • You’re a UK-qualified solicitor. We usually look for around 3 years PQE as a guide

  • You’ve trained at a reputable law firm or in-house, and ideally, you’ve already got a taste for the tech world or a VC-backed scale-up.

  • You’ve got solid experience in at least one key area like M&A, commercial contracts, disputes, marketing, or hosted software agreements.

  • You’re a strong communicator who can translate complex legal jargon into clear, plain English that anyone in the business can understand.

  • You’re proactive, adaptable, and willing to roll up your sleeves to take on challenges that might sit slightly outside your usual area of expertise.
