As Legal Counsel, you will report to the Head of Legal and be a trusted advisor responsible for a variety of tasks to support Chaucer’s global operations in achieving its strategic objectives whilst safeguarding the Group’s interests, protecting customers and upholding our reputation. Your duties will include:

  • Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a wide range of commercial agreements, including broker agreements, reinsurance contracts, vendor contracts, and non-disclosure agreements (NDAs).

  • Providing advice and support on licensing requirements, alternative risk transfer structures, reinsurance, agency / distribution, and related areas of law.

  • Instructing, overseeing, and managing third party legal advisers, and associated costs and expenses.

  • Identifying and escalating potential legal, regulatory, and reputational risks across the business and assisting in the delivery of training to business colleagues on key legal requirements.

  • Assisting in monitoring and advising the business on relevant insurance laws and regulations, particularly those concerning the Lloyd's market (e.g., Lloyd's Byelaws, Market Bulletins), FCA/PRA rules, and international regimes (e.g., EIOPA).

  • Developing and maintaining precedent documents, know-how and guidance.

  • Advising on non-claims disputes.

  • Assisting the Head of Legal and other team members with day-to-day legal queries.

Skills and Competencies
  • Qualified Solicitor (England & Wales or equivalent common law jurisdiction).

  • 1–6 years PQE.

  • Candidates with experience gained in insurance, reinsurance, financial services, or general commercial law, particularly within the Lloyd's market, either from an in-house environment or recognised law firm are highly desirable.

  • Strong foundational knowledge of commercial contracts and/or relevant insurance regulation.

  • Excellent drafting, negotiation, and communication (written and verbal) skills with strong attention to detail.

  • Ability to provide clear, commercially focused legal advice quickly and effectively.

  • Proven ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team, managing multiple priorities.
