We are a small Legal team sitting within Samsung’s fast-growing and even faster-paced European Services Business Office (“ESBO”). ESBO is dedicated to delivering exceptional content and seamless connected user experiences across Samsung’s ecosystem (including stereaming, advertising, mobile, gaming, smart appliances and art) by harnessing its scale, data and technology.
We see ourselves part of the business, helping to facilitate its extraordinary growth, whilst protecting it from legal and regulatory risk. As Legal Counsel, you will provide legal services (contracting, regulatory/compliance advice, general advice etc.) across the whole spectrum of media law – including channel & content licensing, app distribution, ad-tech, advertising, mobile experiences, gaming – and more! ESBO operates across all of Europe, so you will be dealing with colleagues and counterparties all across the continent, as well as in the UK.

Role and Responsibilities

Your key responsibilities

  • Draft and negotiate a broad range of commercial contracts (and associated documentation) relating to all ESBO business activities (e.g. channel & content licences, app distribution agreements, marketing agreements, media sales agreements (including supply-side platforms and trading agreements with agencies etc.).

  • Provide advice navigating legal and regulatory risk, particularly in the targeted advertising, streaming, and app distribution space.

  • Collaborate with and provide support to the European subsidiary legal teams, including by drafting pan-EU contracts for the procurement of services / to facilitate key projects / engagements; and advising on pan-European and local laws relevant to ESBO.

  • Supporting senior regulatory lawyer to create and implement solutions and mitigations where regulation necessitates change to current practices and/or new products.

  • Maintain an understanding of relevant data protection law and regulation, identifying risks and collaborating with privacy colleagues to ensure compliance.

  • Collaborate with colleagues across the EO Legal team (including the general commercial, competition and consumer, and data protection, teams) and the business (e.g. Sales, Finance, Tax, BizOps, Business Development/Partnerships etc.).

  • Help to develop and maintain effective contract processes, our contract management system and precedent agreements ( e.g. playbooks, FAQs, guides etc.).

  • Liaise with and instruct various external law firms and specialists with whom we work;

  • Represent Samsung in external meetings with e.g. counter-parties and regulators.

  • Actively contribute to your own development and to knowledge sharing with lawyers and paralegals across the ESBO and wider Europe Legal teams.

  • Contribute to ensuring the team’s reputation within the wider business as a responsive, ambitious, trusted and commercially-minded legal function.

  • You need to be able to work / communicate with, influence and provide guidance to individuals at all levels of the organisation (including very senior stakeholders). This requires cultural awareness and an ability to communicate legal issues in clear and concise terms that are easily understood by stakeholders of varying seniority.

  • You must be a qualified solicitor in the UK or similar jurisdiction, e.g. Australia. The role would suit candidates with circa 1-3 years PQE, although all candidates with relevant experience are encouraged to apply.

  • Experience with managing a wide variety of commercial transactions in a fast-paced environment is highly desired, as is a thorough understanding of GDPR. Regulatory experience would be beneficial.

  • Experience working in content licensing, advertising and/or media is preferable. Past experience in a reputable law firm is preferrable. Neither is strictly necessary.

What does success look like?

  • You will develop a robust knowledge of the ESBO business and the content, media, advertising and adtech sector.

  • In the first year, you will engage with and build relationships with all key stakeholders in ESBO. This includes developing and improving existing ways of working– streamlining processes, drafting templates, successfully reporting on our team’s successes etc.

  • You will hit the ground running – from day 1 supporting on commercial and analysing laws and regulation relating to ESBO together with providing first class legal advice.

  • You will collaborate with the wider EO Legal team, and present at team meetings on interesting matters you are working on and/or topics relevant to ESBO.

  • You will regularly seek feedback from peers and stakeholders, and act on the same.

  • You will be a true business partner, helping ESBO to meet its targets/business objectives (and celebrating the wins along the way!).
