Our Hosting team delivers InterSystems’ solutions as hosted or managed services to customers worldwide, supporting business-critical and highly regulated workloads that demand exceptional levels of availability, performance, security, and resilience.
The Principal Storage Architect is the senior technical authority responsible for the strategy, architecture, governance, and lifecycle management of InterSystems’ enterprise storage and data protection platforms, including Dell PowerFlex, Dell PowerProtect Data Manager (PPDM), Data Domain, Nutanix distributed storage, and associated cloud storage services. The role holder will define the long-term storage strategy for the hosting organisation, ensuring that storage and data protection services remain scalable, resilient, secure, and aligned with current and future business requirements.
Working across infrastructure, hosting, cloud, security, and engineering teams, the Principal Storage Architect will lead the design and evolution of enterprise-class storage solutions supporting mission-critical customer workloads. The role combines deep technical expertise with strategic leadership, driving platform modernisation, operational excellence, cyber resilience, and continuous improvement across InterSystems’ global hosting estate.
Success is measured through the delivery of robust storage architectures, improved platform scalability and reliability, reduced operational risk, successful technology adoption, and the long-term evolution of InterSystems’ hosting infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
- Define and maintain the strategic roadmap for storage infrastructure and data protection services across InterSystems’ hosted and managed service platforms.
- Serve as the technical authority for enterprise storage architecture, providing guidance, governance, and design standards across global hosting environments.
- Lead the architecture, design, and lifecycle management of Dell PowerFlex storage platforms, ensuring optimal performance, scalability, resilience, and operational efficiency.
- Develop and maintain enterprise storage architectures supporting Nutanix AHV, virtualisation platforms, cloud services, backup solutions, disaster recovery, and business continuity requirements.
- Design storage solutions that deliver high levels of performance, availability, resilience, scalability, and security for business-critical customer workloads.
- Define and maintain enterprise data protection architectures leveraging Dell PowerProtect Data Manager (PPDM) and Dell Data Domain technologies to meet recovery, compliance, and cyber-resilience requirements.
- Develop backup, recovery, replication, and cyber-recovery strategies supporting stringent Recovery Point Objectives (RPOs) and Recovery Time Objectives (RTOs).
- Establish architectural standards, reference designs, and best practices for storage deployment, lifecycle management, monitoring, performance management, and operational support.
- Evaluate emerging storage technologies and industry trends, recommending improvements and innovations that enhance platform capabilities and operational efficiency.
- Lead capacity planning, performance analysis, forecasting, and storage optimisation initiatives to ensure infrastructure can support future business growth.
- Provide technical leadership for major infrastructure initiatives, including platform modernisation, storage refresh programmes, cloud integration, and data centre transformation projects.
- Act as the senior escalation point for complex storage and data protection issues, providing expert guidance during major incidents and problem management activities.
- Drive automation, Infrastructure-as-Code, and operational excellence initiatives to improve consistency, efficiency, and supportability of storage services.
- Collaborate with infrastructure, cloud, network, security, and application teams to ensure storage platforms align with broader enterprise architecture strategies.
- Work closely with technology vendors and strategic partners to influence product direction, evaluate solutions, and optimise commercial and technical outcomes.
- Lead storage-related architecture reviews, risk assessments, and technical governance activities.
- Mentor and develop infrastructure engineers and architects, promoting architectural best practices and technical excellence throughout the organisation.
Experience / Qualifications Required
Essential
- Extensive experience designing, implementing, and architecting enterprise-scale storage platforms within large hosting, cloud, managed service, or enterprise environments.
- Deep expertise in Dell PowerFlex storage architecture, administration, performance optimisation, and lifecycle management.
- Strong experience designing and implementing enterprise data protection solutions using Dell PowerProtect Data Manager (PPDM) and Dell Data Domain technologies.
- Extensive experience with enterprise storage technologies, including SAN, NAS, hyperconverged infrastructure, software-defined storage, object storage, replication, and data protection platforms.
- Strong expertise with Nutanix infrastructure, including AHV, Prism, distributed storage architecture, and platform integration.
- Proven experience designing highly available, resilient infrastructure supporting mission-critical production workloads.
- Strong understanding of storage performance engineering, capacity planning, resilience design, disaster recovery, and business continuity principles.
- Proven experience developing storage strategies and delivering large-scale infrastructure transformation programmes.
- Experience designing backup, recovery, replication, and cyber-resilience solutions supporting demanding service availability requirements.
- Strong knowledge of Linux-based operating systems and enterprise infrastructure architectures.
- Experience establishing technical standards, governance frameworks, architectural roadmaps, and reference architectures.
- Excellent troubleshooting and analytical skills across storage, virtualisation, and infrastructure technologies.
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to influence both technical and business decision-makers.
- Demonstrated ability to lead complex cross-functional initiatives and provide architectural leadership across multiple teams.
Preferred
- Dell Technologies certifications relating to PowerFlex, Data Protection, Storage, or Infrastructure Solutions.
- Experience with Dell Cyber Recovery solutions and ransomware resilience architectures.
- Experience integrating PPDM and Data Domain with Nutanix AHV, VMware, Linux, and enterprise database platforms.
- Experience architecting multi-petabyte storage environments and geographically distributed disaster recovery solutions.
- Experience with public cloud storage services and hybrid cloud architectures (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
- Experience supporting healthcare, financial services, or other highly regulated industries.
- Experience with VMware vSphere and virtualisation platform migration programmes.
- Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code and automation technologies such as Ansible, Terraform, or similar tools.
- Familiarity with Dell ECS object storage and modern S3-compatible storage architectures.
- Enterprise Architecture, Cloud, Storage, or Infrastructure-related industry certifications.
