The role

The HEMS Analyst is Centrica Home’s subject matter expert for Home Energy Management Systems and their interplay with flexible energy. Sitting within the Commercial team, the role supports strategy development, commercial performance and in-life optimisation of Home Energy Management Systems, including solar, batteries, heat pumps, EV charging and smart controls. The role will help to conceive, shape and lead the delivery and in-life optimisation of customer-led propositions. It will provide authoritative technical and commercial leadership across the organisation, turning complex market, regulatory, data and technology requirements into scalable products and propositions.

Key responsibilities

  • Act as the business subject matter expert for HEMS, helping to set the product vision and providing authoritative guidance to senior leaders and delivery teams

  • Support the development of the HEMS product strategy and roadmap, translating customer needs, market developments, commercial value pools and technology capabilities into clear priorities and investment recommendations

  • Conceive and design propositions that orchestrate the relationship between our customers’ homes and their distributed energy assets, including solar, batteries, heat pumps, EV charging and smart controls, to optimise household energy use, drive comfort and convenience and enable participation in flexibility markets

  • Support coordination of cross-functional delivery of HEMS propositions across Centrica Home P&Ls and alongside Product & Design, Digital, Technology, Operations, Marketing, Customer Value, Conduct and external partners to ensure HEMS propositions are launched and managed effectively

  • Define the product, data, device integration and platform capabilities required to aggregate and dispatch customer assets safely, reliably and at scale, working closely with Product & Design, Digital, Technology, Data, Operations and external partners

  • Maintain awareness of the evolving energy, flexibility, smart home and connected technology markets, using insight to inform potential product improvements and future proposition development. Feed this and subject matter expertise into go-to-market plans, customer journeys and customer experience builds

  • Guide the organisation through ambiguity in a fast-evolving market, balancing customer desirability, commercial viability, technical feasibility, market access and operational deliverability, including articulating HEMS recommendations to senior stakeholders

  • Identify and escalate product, conduct, regulatory, operational or delivery risks, ensuring decisions are supported by appropriate insight and governance

What we’re looking for

  • Subject matter expertise and significant product or commercial experience in at least several of the following: HEMS, energy flexibility, demand-side response, VPPs, aggregation, smart tariffs, distributed energy resources or connected energy platforms

  • Practical knowledge of UK flexibility markets and routes to value, such as wholesale optimisation, imbalance, distribution flexibility and ancillary or balancing services, together with the role of aggregators and market access partners

  • Knowledge of the UK residential energy market, distributed energy technologies and the evolving regulatory and market frameworks relevant to smart energy, flexibility and customer outcomes

  • Experience working with device integrations, APIs, telemetry, optimisation or orchestration platforms, and an ability to engage credibly with technical specialists on architecture, interoperability, cyber security and data requirements

  • Commercial acumen, with the ability to interpret revenue, margin, customer, operational and market performance data, including robust understanding of how distributed assets can be monitored, optimised, aggregated and dispatched, including the customer, technical, data, operational and commercial requirements involved

  • Ability to build recommendations from customer insight, market intelligence and performance analysis and experience translating complex market and technical concepts into product requirements, propositions, roadmaps, commercial cases and clear recommendations for senior decision-makers

  • Experience working with cross-functional stakeholders such as pricing, forecasting, finance, marketing, operations, technology and digital teams

  • Ability to connect customer needs, commercial strategy, operational delivery and technology capability into practical product recommendations

  • Strong stakeholder management, communication and influencing skills, with the ability to present complex information simply

  • High attention to detail, ability to prioritise and a growth mindset.

  • Comfortable operating as the recognised expert in an emerging and ambiguous market, forming a point of view, challenging constructively and making well-reasoned decisions with incomplete information
