Purpose of Role
The Head of Law at Regent College London will provide leadership and strategic direction to the School of Law, ensuring academic excellence and fostering a dynamic, inclusive, and innovative learning environment. This individual will be responsible for driving the delivery of high-quality teaching, the development of an innovative and financially sustainable programme portfolio and establishing industry collaboration within the disciplines of law, legal studies, criminology, and forensic sciences. The role will further require a firm commitment to enhancing student success, promoting staff development, and ensuring School activities align with the College’s long-term goals and ambitions in higher education.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership and Strategy
  • Ensure the alignment of academic programmes with emerging industry trends, ensuring the curriculum is innovative and relevant to both students and employers.
  • Foster a culture of academic excellence, continuous improvement, and inclusivity.
  • Oversee the development of new programmes and the continuous review of existing programmes to meet any accreditation standards and industry demands.
  • Work collaboratively with the Leadership Team to share best practice among schools and support and develop an institutional culture of professionalism and excellence.
Academic Oversight
  • Ensure the quality and delivery of teaching and learning, monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of programmes.
  • Ensure the School maintains its regulatory requirements related to the OfS B-conditions, and the quality standards of our partners.
  • Support staff in their academic development.
  • Encourage and support scholarly activity within the School, enhancing the College’s reputation in the fields of law and legal studies.
  • Lead initiatives to support student engagement, retention, and achievement, ensuring a student-centred approach to academic life.
Staff Management and Development
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to academic staff, fostering a positive and collaborative work environment.
  • Assist with recruitment, performance reviews, and professional development opportunities for staff members.
  • Promote diversity and inclusion within the School, ensuring equal opportunities for all staff and students.
External Engagement
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with industry partners, professional bodies, and academic networks.
  • Actively engage with our university partners to foster a positive and collaborative working partnership.
  • Represent the School at external events, conferences, and seminars to enhance the College’s visibility and reputation.
  • Collaborate with industry leaders to ensure that the curriculum reflects the current and future needs of the sector.
  • Identify and pursue opportunities for external collaboration, consultancy, and other industry partnerships.
Financial Management and Resource Allocation
  • Ensure the effective allocation and management of resources.
  • Seek out funding opportunities and grants to support scholarship, teaching initiatives, and development of School resources.
Person Specification
Essential
Academic Qualifications
  • An LLM or equivalent in a relevant discipline (law, legal studies or related field) from a recognised institution.
Experience
  • Significant experience in academic leadership, preferably at a senior level (e.g., Head of Department, Associate Dean, etc.) within a higher education institution.
  • Proven track record in teaching, curriculum development, and academic management within the fields of law and/or legal studies.
  • Experience in strategic planning, staff management, and financial oversight in an academic setting.
Skills and Abilities
  • Strong leadership and decision-making skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate diverse teams.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with students, staff, industry partners, and academic peers.
  • Ability to think strategically, aligning academic goals with institutional and industry needs.
  • Proven ability to manage complex projects and deliver outcomes within a competitive academic environment.

Desirable
Experience
  • PhD or equivalent in a relevant discipline (law, legal studies or related field) from a recognised institution.
  • Experience in managing interdisciplinary teams and collaborative teaching initiatives.
  • Prior experience working in a leadership role within a college or university that offers courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Engagement with academic and industry networks in the fields of law and legal studies.
  • Experience working with franchised and/or validated partnerships.
Additional Skills
  • Knowledge of current trends and innovations in law and legal studies disciplines.
  • Familiarity with accreditation processes and regulatory bodies within higher education.
