🐦 About Birdie
At Birdie, we’re reimagining care for older adults. We’re building the technology that powers the future of home healthcare, empowering care teams with tools to deliver better, more dignified care, and enabling older people to thrive in their own homes for longer. Our all-in-one solution powers millions of care visits every month, equipping care providers with the tools they need to deliver exceptional, efficient care.
We’re not here to tinker at the edges. We’re here to radically transform a broken system.
That’s why we’ve built an all-in-one platform that supported over 60 million care visits and enabled care for 116,000 individuals in 2025, and we continue to grow our impact. We’re scaling fast, but staying true to our purpose. That’s why we’re proud to be a B Corp, using business as a force for good.
Founded in 2017, Birdie is backed by world-class investors like Index Ventures, Sofina and Omers. In 2023, we ranked #6 in the Deloitte Fast 50, making us one of the fastest-growing tech companies in the UK. You can check out more about our impact and recognition here.
But speed isn’t the point. Impact is.
⚡️ Your mission
As Head of Data at Birdie, your mission is to build the data foundation the business can actually build on: getting the platform architecture, governance and structural thinking right so that everything Birdie wants to do with data, from customer analytics to AI-native product features, becomes achievable rather than aspirational.
With over 1,500 providers and 60 million care visits on the platform, we hold a dataset that is genuinely unparalleled in home care. The opportunity ahead is significant: predictive care quality intelligence, early warning systems for deterioration, workforce optimisation at scale. None of it is reachable without the foundations being right first. This role is about building those foundations, and then driving what they make possible.
The platform has to be designed with the product in mind from the start, and there is a real opportunity to influence how an entire business comes to think about and use it. This is not a role for someone who thrives in large, structured organisations - it suits someone who does their best work when the pace is high, the scope is broad and the path isn't fully defined yet.
🦸♀️ How you will contribute
Lead the modernisation and architectural direction of Birdie's data platform, ensuring it is reliable, secure and built for ML and AI-native product development from the ground up.
Own Birdie's ML data infrastructure: the feature stores, pipelines, training data management and model-serving data contracts that make it possible to build and ship AI-powered product features reliably in production.
Identify where Birdie needs to capture, structure or govern data differently to enable AI-native product features, and work proactively with product and engineering to close those gaps before they become blockers.
Define and communicate a data strategy that connects platform investment to product and commercial outcomes, and earn buy-in from senior stakeholders across the business.
Own platform cost management, making deliberate tooling and architecture trade-offs and building the case for data investment to a non-technical leadership audience.
Build and lead a high-performing data team: establish clear ways of working, identify skill gaps, hire well, and protect the team's focus from reactive ad-hoc demand.
Own and drive the customer-facing analytics product in partnership with the product team, ensuring data features create real and measurable value for care providers.
🤩 You'll thrive here if...
You have designed or materially rebuilt a cloud data platform and can make architectural trade-offs without needing a technical translator.
You have operationalised ML models in production, including feature store design, training data pipelines, model evaluation datasets and serving contracts, and you understand the difference between a platform that is genuinely AI-ready and one that merely tolerates AI being bolted on.
You have designed and implemented data governance and security frameworks, can reason about data access controls, sensitivity classification and compliance in regulated environments, and you understand that governance is a prerequisite for customer trust, not a constraint on velocity.
You think proactively about where a business needs to capture or structure data to unlock future product capabilities, not just how to serve the data it already has.
You have multiple examples of taking complex, ambiguous data projects from diagnosis through to delivery, with a consistent operational cadence, and you can talk specifically about what broke along the way and how you recovered.
You have directly managed senior ICs and/or team leads, including navigating both underperformance and over-performance, and can point to a team you've made meaningfully more effective.
🧠 Imposter syndrome is real — and we don't expect you to tick every box. If you're excited about our mission and think you could make a difference here, we want to hear from you.
