Boeing Defence UK (BDUK) Environmental Engineering Team is seeking an experienced Environmental Lead Engineer to continue the development of the BDUK programme specific Environmental Management System/Strategy, to define and/or refine BDUK Environmental Management procedures, processes and provide Environmental Management subject matter expertise to extant and emergent projects and programmes involving BDUK and, potentially, the wider Boeing Company.

The ideal candidate will be an Environmental Management Specialist with a strong background in technical leadership in a highly regulated industry and can team effectively.

Position Responsibilities

Provide Environmental Management expertise to BDUK programmes to assist the integration of Environmental Management considerations within the design and development of BDUK Products, Systems and Services. 

  • Take responsibility for technical interfaces with subcontractors and suppliers to ensure that appropriate Environmental Management requirements are flowed down, as well as performing review, comment and approval of supplied Environmental Management artefacts.

  • Support the refinement of a coherent Environmental Management Strategy for BDUK programmes in compliance with relevant legislation and MOD Requirements defined in Defence Standard 00-051, Issue 1, taking due cognisance of the guidance provided within the UK MOD Project Oriented Environmental Management System (POEMS).

  • Author and review Environmental Case Reports and supporting deliverables. Gather supporting evidence through site visits and lead and facilitate working groups comprising internal and external stakeholders. Brief results to programme management, relevant business functions and the customer.

  • Lead, mentor and develop a growing team of Environmental and Safety Engineers reporting to the System Safety and Environmental Engineering Manager.

  • Lead the development of Environmental Management strategies appropriate to each project or programme resulting in a cogent Environmental Case which shall include the following, as required by the project or programme-specific Environmental Management Plan or Strategy:

    • Development of Environmental Management Plans

    • Develop a register of relevant Environmental Management standards

    • Identification of Environmental Management stakeholders

    • Identification of environmental aspects and impacts within programme scopes

    • Produce Environmental Management Feature Matrices

    • Lead and facilitate Environmental Impact Screening and Scoping workshops

    • Produce Environmental Impact Screening and Scoping Statements

    • Influence the selection, design, usage and disposal of products and services through all relevant life cycle phases

    • Derivation of Environmental Management design requirements

    • Development of Environmental Case Reports

  • Act as a point of contact for environmental matters

  • Liaison with other Boeing, customer and supplier technical disciplines to ensure appropriate evidence is available to support the Environmental Management strategy

  • Review and approve programme environmental deliverables

  • Ensure environmental requirements are flowed down to subcontractors/suppliers

  • Review and approve subcontractor/supplier Environmental Management deliverables

  • Support Environmental Management Committee and Working Group meetings

  • Support customer and subcontractor/supplier Environmental Management meetings

  • Provide Environmental Management support to the System Safety programme including support to System Safety Working Groups or other associated meetings

  • Present Environmental Management inputs to requirements and design reviews

  • Participate in task-level programme planning, estimating and support for Environmental Management activities

  • Identify risks, issues and opportunities and support the development of mitigation plans.

  • Support the EHS team on individual programmes in supporting the BDUK Environmental Management System and to comply with appropriate UK Environmental Management legislation

  • Conduct/support internal and external environmental audits and review changes for environmental impacts

  • Drive and report on environmental improvements

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience)

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology (including Manufacturing Technology), Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or non-US equivalent qualifications directly related to the work statement

  • Significant Years of experience in an Environmental Management role or similar

  • Member of a recognised Environmental Management professional body

  • Demonstrable experience of planning work and developing/using meaningful metrics to evaluate Environmental Management status and provide performance visibility

  • The role will have significant UK MOD and wider Boeing interface and therefore a person who is diplomatic whilst being strong minded is required

  • The candidate will be required to pass a BPSS to take up this appointment

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Working towards professional development equivalent to ISEP Chartered Environmentalist.

  • Experience in the application of Environmental Management in defence programmes

  • Experience of Defence Standard 00-051 and/or POEMS

  • Experience of the Aviation or other highly regulated industries
