The role

Impact expected

As the Engineering Manager of the Onboard Experience team, you will lead our initiatives to develop innovative and intuitive user experiences for both our internal team and future consumer automobiles. Your leadership will be instrumental in creating seamless, efficient, and user-friendly interfaces that support the development, testing, and deployment of Wayve's autonomous driving AI. This role demands a deep understanding of user interface design, full-stack development, and the unique requirements of in-vehicle software systems. Success in this role will significantly impact Wayve’s ability to deliver cutting-edge autonomous driving experiences to both our internal teams and future customers.

Unlike typical fullstack engineering teams, this team at Wayve is creating the user experience for self driving vehicles. The team will work on true full stack problems as diverse as creating AI-driven verbal interactions via an Android Auto interface  to the vehicle to parsing CAN-bus messages on the vehicle to provide visibility to engineering teams. This team also works on projects both for our internal fleet, which will have a wide degree of latitude, and for our external customers, which will have a wide degree of impact. Furthermore, you and this team will be innovating on what user experience should be for self-driving vehicles.

Challenges you will own

The Onboard Experience team is pivotal in defining how users interact with Wayve's autonomous driving systems. Collaborating extensively with stakeholders from Safety, Research, and Product Management, you will drive success in the following challenges:

  • Team Leadership and Strategic Oversight: Lead a multidisciplinary team of Full Stack Software Engineers and Android Auto Software Engineers, setting clear objectives and milestones. Drive strategic user interface development across both internal testing platforms and future consumer products, aligning with Wayve’s objectives.
  • User Experience Development: Oversee the design and implementation of user interfaces that enable safety drivers to monitor and control autonomous vehicles effectively. Ensure that onboard engineers and scientists have the necessary tools to understand and interact with the AI.
  • Consumer Interface Innovation: Collaborate with Product Management to create intuitive and engaging user experiences for vehicle owners and passengers, enabling seamless interaction with the autonomous system and its features.
  • Automotive Embedded Software Development: Ensure the delivery and maintenance of high-quality software that delivers responsive user interfaces operating in automotive embedded environments, focusing on performance, safety, and security.
  • Performance Monitoring and Diagnostics: Develop comprehensive monitoring and diagnostic tools to swiftly address and resolve issues impacting user experience and system performance.
  • Resource Management: Efficiently allocate resources, including personnel and technical infrastructure, to meet project timelines and performance goals.
  • Talent Cultivation: Recruit, mentor, and develop your team, promoting a culture of technical excellence and innovation. Identify skill gaps and lead training and recruitment efforts to assemble a top-tier Onboard Experience team.

What we are looking for in our candidate

Essential:

  • Proven Leadership: At least 5 years in a leadership role within software development, including 3 years directly managing a software development team through all stages of the software lifecycle.
  • Expertise in User Interface Development: Strong knowledge of front-end and back-end development, and experience with user interface design.
  • Technical Proficiency: Hands-on experience with Linux-based development, full-stack software development, and the Android Auto ecosystem. Proficiency in programming languages such as Rust, C++, and Typescript, and relevant software development tools and environments such as React.
  • Strategic Acumen: Excellent ability to conceive and execute user interface projects that align with both immediate and long-term business objectives of the Onboard Software organisation.
  • Collaborative Abilities: Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, capable of fostering collaboration across diverse technical teams and company divisions.
  • Educational Background: A 4-year degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

Desirable:

  • Automotive Software Experience: Background in developing automotive software, with knowledge of ASPICE, DriveOS, or AutoSAR.
  • Educational Background: A Master’s degree or greater in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field is desired.
  • Experience with Embedded Systems: Experience creating and deploying software for embedded systems, especially automotive embedded systems.

This role is an opportunity to shape the future of autonomous driving experiences at Wayve, ensuring that both our internal teams and future customers can interact seamlessly with our cutting-edge AI technology.

We understand that everyone has a unique set of skills and experiences and that not everyone will meet all of the requirements listed above. If you’re passionate about self-driving cars and think you have what it takes to make a positive impact on the world, we encourage you to apply.

This is a full-time role based in our office in London. At Wayve we want the best of all worlds so we operate a hybrid working policy that combines time together in our offices and workshops to fuel innovation, culture, relationships and learning, and time spent working from home. We operate core working hours so you can determine the schedule that works best for you and your team.
