The Data Engineer will design and develop production-grade features for an AI-enabled data product, translating business requirements into technical solutions while ensuring maintainability and collaboration with various teams.

Our purpose is to give everyone real confidence to put their money to work. With a heritage dating back more than 175 years, we have a long history of innovation in savings and investments, combining asset management and insurance expertise to offer a wide range of solutions.

Our two distinct operating segments, Asset Management and Life, work together to provide access to balanced, long-term investment and savings solutions.

Through telling it like it is, owning it now, and moving it forward together with care and integrity; we are creating an exceptional place to work for exceptional talent.

We will consider flexible working arrangements for any of our roles and also offer work place accommodations to ensure you have what you need to effectively deliver in your role.

The role:

This role is open to engineers at different stages of their career who bring curiosity, commitment, and the determination to see meaningful work through to production.

We’re building an internal AI Copilot that helps colleagues across the business work smarter with trusted data — and we’re looking for an Engineer who wants to learn, grow, and deliver real impact.

You’ll join the Client Distribution Data Platform delivery team, building production‑ready data and AI solutions that support real business workflows. This role is open to engineers at different stages of their career — you don’t need to meet every requirement to apply.

This is a UK‑based, London role only. We do not offer relocation and this role is not part of an offshore delivery model.

How we work

  • We collaborate in a cross‑functional environment with business, governance, and technology teams
  • We collaborate in the morning and protect focus time for delivery during the rest of the day
  • We value thoughtful engineering — reliability, observability, maintainability, and continuous improvement matter as much as new features
  • Maintenance, documentation, and improvement are recognised and valued parts of delivery

What you’ll do

  • Design, build, and support production features for an AI‑enabled data product, including an internal Copilot agent
  • Work with operational and product‑focused data pipelines powering real business processes
  • Translate business questions into clear technical problem statements and solution options
  • Contribute to extending and hardening AI solutions, with a strong focus on reliability and operational readiness
  • Take ownership of specific services or components, while building them so ownership can be shared or handed over
  • Collaborate with business and technical partners to deliver tangible outcomes
  • Use AI tools pragmatically, including knowing when not to use AI

What we’re looking for

We’re interested in skills and potential, not a perfect checklist.

If some of these skills are new to you but you’re keen to learn, we still encourage you to apply.

Essential

  • Experience building or contributing to cloud‑based data or software solutions
  • Good working knowledge of SQL
  • Experience with at least one programming language (C# preferred; Python also considered)
  • Understanding of data engineering concepts (pipelines, data flows, operational data)
  • Experience working within existing CI/CD and infrastructure‑as‑code practices
  • Ability to explain technical ideas clearly, verbally and in writing
  • Curiosity, problem‑solving mindset, and willingness to learn

Nice to have

  • Exposure to AI‑enabled development (e.g. prompt engineering, AI‑assisted tools)
  • Awareness of security best practices
  • Exposure to asset management or financial services (not required)

Learning, growth and progression

This is a growth role, not a terminal position.

  • Pairing and support during your first weeks as you build confidence and autonomy
  • Access to a wide range of internal learning resources and knowledge‑sharing
  • Support for Microsoft Azure certifications
  • Progression based on impact and learning, not tenure
  • Opportunities to grow towards AI specialist roles and other technical career paths
  • Internal moves and career development are encouraged

What the hiring process looks like

You can expect:

  • A technical conversation covering data, pipelines, and AI concepts relevant to the role
  • A discussion focused on how you think and approach problems (no trick questions)
  • A conversation with team members about how we work and support each other
  • Time at every stage for you to ask questions

We’re interested in understanding your thinking and learning approach — not perfect answers. Adjustments or support are available throughout the process.
