Cloud FinOps Engineer

The Cloud FinOps Engineer is responsible for the financial governance, optimization, reporting, forecasting, and commercial management of the organization's public cloud estate across Azure, AWS, and GCP. The role ensures that cloud investments are managed effectively, costs are transparent and attributable, financial controls are maintained, and optimization opportunities are identified and realized.


Working closely with Cloud Engineering, Platform Operations, Business Unit leaders, Finance teams, Procurement, and Cloud Service Owners, the Cloud FinOps Engineer provides the financial discipline and governance necessary to maximize business value from cloud consumption while maintaining visibility and accountability across a distributed administration model.


Key Responsibilities


Cloud Financial Governance


  • Establish and maintain cloud financial governance processes and standards.
  • Ensure cloud costs are accurately allocated and attributed to products, applications, business units, and cost centres.
  • Maintain and improve chargeback, show back, and cost allocation models.
  • Govern cloud financial controls, tagging standards, ownership validation, and cost accountability processes.
  • Act as the primary subject matter expert for cloud financial management and FinOps practices.

Cost Management & Optimization


  • Identify, track, prioritize, and manage cloud cost optimization opportunities across Azure, AWS, and GCP environments.
  • Work with cloud platform and application teams to implement rightsizing, storage optimization, reserved capacity, and licensing optimization initiatives.
  • Operate effectively within a distributed administration environment where cloud resources may be managed by numerous business units and technical teams.
  • Monitor realization of savings opportunities and report achieved versus forecast benefits.

Financial Analysis & Reporting


  • Develop and maintain executive, operational, and financial dashboards for: Cloud account owners, Product owners, Business unit leaders, IT Finance teams and Executive leadership.
  • Produce regular and ad-hoc reporting on: Cloud spend, Consumption trends, Unit economics, Cost allocation, Savings realization, forecast accuracy, Budget performance

Forecasting & Budget Management


  • Develop and maintain cloud expenditure forecasts across multiple cloud platforms.
  • Monitor forecast versus actual spend and identify root causes of variances.
  • Partner with Finance teams to develop annual budgets, quarterly forecasts, and financial outlooks and improve forecast accuracy and financial planning processes.

Financial Data Analytics


  • Mine and analyze cloud billing and consumption data from cloud providers and FinOps tooling.
  • Perform forensic analysis of spend anomalies, emerging trends, and cost drivers before they materially impact budgets or forecasts.
  • Investigate unexpected cost increases, billing discrepancies, and forecast deviations.
  • Build models to improve visibility into cloud consumption and business value metrics.

Reservations & Savings Plan Management


  • Manage cloud commitment-based discount programs including Azure/AWS Reserved Instances & Savings Plans.
  • Perform monthly utilization reviews and true-up activities such as reservation renewals, exchanges, modifications, and optimization strategies.
  • Develop recommendations to maximize coverage and utilization while minimizing waste.

Contract & Vendor Management


  • Provide financial and consumption input to cloud vendor negotiations and contract renewals.
  • Support Procurement and Vendor Management teams with commercial analysis, evaluating vendor proposals, cloud pricing models, discount structures, and consumption commitments.
  • Assist with cloud vendor business reviews and strategic planning activities.

Marketplace & Commercial Operations


  • Execute and govern cloud marketplace purchases and subscription-based vendor offerings.
  • Ensure appropriate approvals, financial controls, and ownership attribution are maintained.
  • Validate commercial alignment between marketplace purchases and approved budgets.

Shared Services Cost Allocation


  • Maintain, and improve financial allocation methodologies for shared cloud services.
  • Calculate and administer recharge models for centrally provided cloud capabilities.
  • Create and manage allocation formulas used to distribute shared platform operational costs.
  • Validate allocation accuracy and stakeholder acceptance of resulting chargeback models.

Required Skills & Experience


Technical & Cloud Experience


  • Strong experience in Cloud Financial Operations, FinOps, IT Financial Management, Technology Business Management (TBM), or related disciplines.
  • Hands-on experience with at least one large scale enterprise major cloud platform from: Azure, AWS.
  • Strong understanding of cloud consumption, billing models and cloud technologies at an operations level.

FinOps & Cost Management Tools


  • Demonstrated experience with one or more of the following:
  • Apptio Cloudability, Apptio One, Apptio TBM frameworks and methodologies
  • Azure Cost Management, AWS Cost Explorer and/or AWS Cost and Usage Reports (CUR)
  • FinOps Foundation best practices

Financial & Analytical Skills


  • Strong financial modelling and forecasting capabilities.
  • Ability to perform detailed cost analysis using large and complex datasets.
  • Advanced Excel/Power BI skills including Pivot tables, financial modelling, Data reconciliation
  • Experience creating budgets, forecasts, variance analyses, and executive financial reports.
  • Excellent quantitative and problem-solving skills.

Stakeholder Management


  • Ability to engage effectively with: Finance teams, Procurement teams, Executive leadership, Product owners, Cloud engineers, Platform operations teams
  • Strong presentation and communication skills.
  • Ability to explain complex financial information to technical and non-technical audiences.

Desired Qualifications


  • FinOps Certified Practitioner or FinOps Professional certification.
  • Microsoft Azure certification or AWS certification.
  • IBM Apptio/Cloudability/TBM certification.
  • Batchelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field.

Preferred / Bonus Experience


  • Experience with Coupa or equivalent Procurement systems.
  • Experience with financial planning and modelling tools such as: Oracle Essbase or Hyperion or similar
  • Experience with SQL, Power BI or other data analytics platforms.
