Hampshire (site-based)

We're looking for an experienced Applications Architect to join our Digital Applications Transformation team. This is an opportunity to play a pivotal role in complex transformation programmes. We’re passionate about building diverse, inclusive teams and actively encourage applications from women, underrepresented groups, and neurodivergent candidates, with support and adjustments available throughout the hiring process.

You'll work at the heart of major business and technology change initiatives, partnering with architects, engineers and business leaders to design solutions that deliver real value. Whether you're helping modernise core mainframe platforms, defining enterprise-wide architecture roadmaps, or guiding development teams through delivery, you'll be instrumental in shaping the future of our clients' technology ecosystems. The Solution Architect is responsible for designing and delivering end-to-end technical solutions aligned with business requirements and enterprise architecture standards. The role bridges the gap between business needs and technology, ensuring scalable, secure, and cost-effective solutions that support digital transformation.

Key Responsibilities

EDRMS & Enterprise Content Management

  • Lead architecture and technical oversight for Electronic Document and Records Management Systems (EDRMS).
  • Support integrated search capabilities and bespoke application components developed primarily in Java.
  • Ensure the secure deployment, maintenance, and enhancement of document and records management platforms.
  • Provide expertise in enterprise-scale content management solutions such as:
    • IBM FileNet, OpenText or similar enterprise EDRMS platforms

Client-Side Application Management

  • Assess and design secure deployment models for desktop and end-user applications.
  • Determine application installation, configuration, packaging, lockdown, and security requirements.
  • Work with third-party packaging suppliers to ensure applications are delivered according to security and operational standards.
  • Support software lifecycle management, including upgrades, patching, and version control.

Server-Side Application Services

  • Design and maintain secure hosting architectures for applications operating within private cloud environments.
  • Support both COTS and GOTS applications, including:
    • Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
    • Analysis toolsets
    • Database-driven business applications
    • Web-based application platforms
  • Define secure installation approaches and maintain supportability through application upgrades and lifecycle changes.
  • Ensure application resilience, performance, and operational sustainability.

Application Modernisation & Innovation

  • Identify opportunities for application modernization and service improvement.
  • Support the introduction of new business applications and emerging technologies.
  • Evaluate application migration and hosting opportunities for new customers.
  • Assess application portability, data migration requirements, and security implications when onboarding new services.
  • Contribute to the future expansion of bespoke application development capabilities.

Security & DevSecOps

  • Apply security-by-design principles throughout the application lifecycle.
  • Work with DevSecOps pipelines to support secure application delivery and deployment automation.
  • Ensure applications comply with security accreditation, vulnerability remediation, and governance requirements.
  • Collaborate with security architects and operational teams to continuously improve application security posture.

Agile Delivery

  • Operate within a SAFe Agile delivery framework.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, reviews, retrospectives, and backlog refinement.
  • Collaborate with product owners, development teams, infrastructure teams, and customer stakeholders to deliver business value.

Stakeholder Management

  • Build strong relationships with customer architects, technical authorities, and delivery teams.
  • Support architecture reviews, design assurance activities, and governance forums.
  • Provide technical guidance and leadership across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Act as a trusted advisor on application architecture and hosting strategies.

Essential Skills/Qualifications:

  • Proven experience as an Applications Architect, Solution Architect, or Technical Architect.
  • Strong understanding of enterprise application architecture principles.
  • Experience supporting large-scale Electronic Document and Records Management Systems (EDRMS).
  • Knowledge of enterprise content management platforms such as OpenText, IBM FileNet, or similar.
  • Experience with COTS, GOTS, and bespoke application environments.
  • Understanding of application deployment, packaging, and configuration management.
  • Experience with private cloud-hosted applications and web-based architectures.
  • Strong knowledge of databases, application integrations, and web technologies.
  • Experience producing architectural artefacts, including HLDs and service designs.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
  • Understanding of secure application design and lifecycle management.
  • Batchelor Degree or Equivalent qualifications.

Desirable Experience

  • Java application development knowledge.
  • Experience with GIS platforms and specialist analyst toolsets.
  • Experience within highly regulated or secure government environments.
  • Knowledge of DevSecOps tools, CI/CD pipelines, and automation frameworks.
  • Experience working within SAFe Agile delivery environments.
  • Experience supporting application modernization and transformation initiatives.
  • Familiarity with cloud migration and application onboarding projects.
  • Exposure to bespoke business application development and solution delivery.

Working Environment

  • Operates within a customer-governed architectural framework where the customer retains Design Authority and Enterprise Architecture ownership.
  • Works collaboratively with customer Chief Architects and Application Architects who review and assure solution designs.
  • Responsible for delivering application architecture and implementation designs that comply with customer standards, governance processes, and security requirements.
  • Focused primarily on application services rather than enterprise architecture ownership or application portfolio rationalisation activities.
