The Opportunity

We are looking for a hands-on Workshop Manager to lead the day-to-day operations of our busy Hire depot in Heanor.

As a key operational hub supporting major utility contracts, this role is critical to ensuring equipment is maintained, prepared, and delivered in line with strict SLAs. You’ll take ownership of workshop performance, team leadership, and health & safety, ensuring the highest standards are consistently met.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the day-to-day running of the workshop and yard, ensuring high standards of housekeeping, health, safety, and environmental compliance
  • Manage and coordinate scheduled maintenance of all hire assets, including generators, tanks, cables, and test equipment
  • Ensure the Protean system is accurately maintained in real time, tracking equipment locations and maintenance records
  • Allocate and manage daily workloads for workshop engineers to maximise efficiency and productivity
  • Complete and oversee pre-delivery inspections before equipment is released to customers
  • Control and monitor breakdowns and working time, working closely with the Hire Service Delivery Manager
  • Authorise and manage overtime in line with operational needs
  • Collaborate with Sales Managers to ensure all orders can be fulfilled, escalating risks where required
  • Manage the allocation of assets for hire, ensuring readiness and availability
  • Capture and track damage, loss, and equipment returns
  • Conduct competency checks and performance management for workshop staff
  • Support team development, including technical training and soft skills progression
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives across workshop processes
  • Liaise with stores to ensure availability of parts and materials
  • Conduct quality control checks to maintain high standards and protect brand reputation
  • Ensure full compliance with processes and procedures, raising NCRs where required
  • Promote a strong safety-first culture
  • Ensure repairs are completed within 48 hours, escalating where necessary
  • Provide technical support and expertise to resolve issues quickly and effectively
  • Maintain and uphold Rehlko standards within your area

The Person

  • Proven experience in a workshop, plant hire, generator, or engineering environment
  • Previous man-management or supervisory experience
  • Strong understanding of health & safety and workshop compliance
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, SLA-driven environment
  • Excellent organisation, planning, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management ability
  • Hands-on, proactive approach with a focus on continuous improvement
