Overview of the Department/Section

The Growth Markets team is responsible for origination and relationship coverage for Sovereign/ State Owned Enterprises, Corporate and DFI clients across key jurisdictions such as Africa, Russia/CEE and Central Asia.

This role sits within the Africa team, where the bank is seeking to expand its coverage. 

Main Purpose of the Role 

The role will provide critical and wide-ranging support in relationship management, origination and transaction execution functions borne by client-facing Relationship Managers on the Growth Markets desk. Progressive direct client coverage responsibilities will be expected.

As a member of the Growth Markets GCIB team (Global Corporate & Investment Banking), the Vice President will be responsible for ensuring that MUFG corporate clients receive exceptional service throughout the life of financing transactions, in accordance with all relevant internal and regulatory processes, guidelines and standards.

The Growth Markets origination strategy places high emphasis on OTD and distribution to institutional investors through capital markets structures and market-oriented structured solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Bank entity associated tasks

  • Origination & Marketing: Work with Relationship Managers to originate all MUFG banking products and services – focus both on traditional Corporate Banking clients to enhance ancillary business activity, whilst continue to expand the Originate to Distribute franchise through structured sales team. Work jointly with all the product teams including Syndications, Capital markets, Structured Finance, Derivatives, Structured Solutions, Repo, etc. OTD will be a key growth focus – targeting Sovereign risk as well as Structured finance (including Project finance) origination, structuring and distribution (all done in conjunction with the relevant product teams).
  • Manage day to day client interactions. Regularly engage with clients to support the successful execution of transaction, originate new business opportunities as well as servicing ad-hoc requirements from the clients.  Use knowledge gained through direct client contact to contribute to overall development of client relationship. 
  • Credit: Credit support: deal screening materials, returns, credit memo, engaging with internal product teams and externally as required to structure the transaction, gathering market, country intelligence and target client research. 
  • Structuring and Execution/ Negotiations: Provide support/ lead discussions with internal / external legal teams, product teams, risk mitigating partners, borrowers and other stakeholders to support structuring negotiation and timely execution of the documentation to a consistently high standard.
  • Compliance Coordination: Engage regularly with Compliance/ Financial Crime team to screen all transactional activity on the desk in adherence with the process set up as part of the EM strategy. Ensure all other KYC processes (renewal and on-boarding) are completed in a timely manner and to an adequate standard. 
  • Pre- and post-signing administration to ensure smooth execution of all the Transactional documentation and ensuring all relevant middle / back office colleagues are informed in a timely manner.

Securities (MUS) entity associated tasks

Transaction development and structuring: Interact directly and in support of Relationship Managers, with private-side GCIB Syndicate, MUS Structured Solutions and Derivatives Solutions Group colleagues

Transaction execution: Continuous engagement, with direct responsibility, with MUS Structured Solutions, Syndicate and Sales colleagues in order to refine transaction structure as well as understanding investor requirements.

Process administration: Engage directly with Legal, Compliance and Financial Crime colleagues as these activities pertain to capital markets-oriented transaction preparation, execution and post-execution documentation.

Work Experience

Essential:

  • At least 3 years relevant industry exposure and corporate banking experience
  • Exposure to capital markets execution techniques including the behaviour of institutional investors and ESG preferences/markets
  • Experience of working with sovereigns highly desirable.

Skills and Experience

Functional / Technical Competencies:

Essential

  • Strong written and verbal French language skills
  • Advanced understanding of and familiarity with corporate and investment banking products, with a focus on Syndicated Lending, Transaction Banking, Debt Capital Markets, Rate & Commodity Derivatives, Export/Trade and Project Finance, and M&A finance.
  • Strong credit risk skills and adequate legal documentation experience.
  • A can-do attitude and strong interpersonal skills are absolutely critical.
  • Demonstrate commercial acumen, results-oriented
  • Knowledge of current affairs and interest in emerging markets developments.
  • Good understanding of the OTD model and its requirements
  • Detailed knowledge of specific procedures and a good understanding of the business area
  • Strong computer literacy, including very strong command of Microsoft modules e.g. Excel / PowerPoint
  • Able to communicate effectively with external and internal clients
