The roleWe’re looking for a UX consultant to join our multidisciplinary team designing and delivering innovative, user-centred digital products and public services for Government and Private Sector clients.
You’ll be a great listener and communicator with a creative, structured, and logical approach to understanding problems and designing inclusive, human-centred experiences.
We’re specifically looking for a pragmatic team player with an appreciation of both business and user needs, who is keen to develop their ‘T-shaped’ skills and is not afraid to take on new challenges.
Skills and experience requiredUser-centred design and ways of working
- Experience designing content and interactions for UK Government or public sector digital services, working to the Government Service Standard, and WCAG
- Ability to design simple, usable, accessible services that meet user needs, policy intent, and business objectives.
- Demonstrable knowledge of GOV.UK content and design standards, including plain English and accessibility, ideally with experience of taking services through service assessments
- Experience working in agile, multidisciplinary teams with developers, researchers, product managers, and stakeholders on government projects and programmes across the phases of the delivery cycle (Discovery through to Beta/Live)
- Ability to facilitate workshops, co-design sessions, and usability testing.
- Confidence influencing stakeholders using user needs and evidence.
- Excellent written, verbal, and facilitation skills.
- Strong understanding of technical and delivery constraints in government environments.
- Ability to support teams in user-centred design and agile ways of working.
- Proven experience writing, editing, and iterating user-centred content to meet identified user needs including pair-writing with colleagues and stakeholders.
- Ability to devise, test, and refine different content formats (e.g. transactional content or UX microcopy, forms, GOV.UK guidance, notifications) across the whole user journey.
- Experience iterating content based on user research findings, usability testing, analytics, and service data.
- Ability to write plain English content that meets statutory, regulatory, or policy requirements while remaining usable and accessible to all users
- Experience designing intuitive, accessible interactions for digital services, using GOV.UK patterns.
- Ability to create and iterate user flows, scenarios, wireframes, and interaction designs, informed by data and user insights
- Experience prototyping and testing solutions using paper, digital, and code-based prototypes, using Figma and the GOV.UK Prototype Kit.
- Ability to test and refine designs for usability and accessibility across devices and platforms.
- Experience planning and conducting user research with internal and external users, selecting appropriate qualitative and quantitative methods.
- Ability to analyse research findings and service data, and communicate clear, evidence-based insights to inform design decisions
Ability to support iterative improvement through evidence and data-informed decision-making, clearly communicating to stakeholders - Experience working with stakeholders to define success metrics and evaluate the impact of services.
- Contributes to the development of the Design practice and community
- Supports thought leadership, case studies, and insights showcasing expertise in both content and interaction design.
- Mentors, coaches, supports and manages colleagues
- Contributes to client proposals and presentations to help win new projects
