Substack empowers creators with financial autonomy, ownership and a direct connection to their communities. Substack’s model, based on direct subscriptions, has fueled an explosion of independent publishing and is revolutionizing culture.

We're looking for a UK Senior Communications Manager to help Substack expand its brand across the United Kingdom. This person will be tasked with strategically using a variety of communications channels, including publicity and events, to amplify Substack’s brand, its product, and the creators who use the platform. The ideal candidate will be an innovative, creative thinker, with a deep interest in supporting creators and their right to publish their work. They’ll take a proactive approach to the role, and be eager to make an impact in a fast-paced, startup environment.

This role reports to the Head of Communications & Brand, and is based in London, England.

Responsibilities:

  • Shape the UK-focused communications strategy. Work closely with the Head of Communications & Brand and the Head of UK + Europe to develop and execute communications strategies for the UK audience, bringing new creators and subscribers to Substack through a variety of communications channels.

  • Draft press materials. Write and refine media briefing documents, spokesperson bios, and key deliverables for interviews and speaking opportunities.

  • Collaborate across functions. Serve as the primary communications team liaison for the UK Partnerships team, identifying timely opportunities to elevate UK-based writers and creators while developing longer lead storytelling opportunities.

  • Operate & execute events. Translate strategy into execution across the events lifecycle—from concept and promotion through on-the-ground coordination—ensuring every detail reflects the quality and creativity of the Substack brand.

  • Manage European media requests. Manage incoming media requests from other European countries, syncing with relevant colleagues to determine responses.

Requirements

  • 8+ years experience in communications or publicity. Experience in media relations, with a deep network of relationships across outlets and experience working with journalists and producers to pitch and execute stories.

  • Events experience. Experience transitioning event ideas into actionable plans, and spearheading the entire event production lifecycle, from conceptualization to execution.

  • Excellent communicator. Strong written, verbal, and diplomatic skills.

  • Sharp attention to detail. Passion for logistics and operations.

  • Substack fluency. A voracious reader and subscriber to Substacks, with a keen sense of the evolving tech and media landscape.

  • Entrepreneurial spirit. Excited to work in a start-up environment. Comfortable working quickly and effectively while managing several projects under deadline.

  • London-based. Preference for candidates in or around London but remote is possible for the right experience level.

  • Engage with all voices. Willing to collaborate with any writer or creator on the platform regardless of their views.

  • Crisis experience. Strategic thinker with a spine of steel, someone who embraces high-pressure moments.

  • Flexibility to travel. Available to travel globally to oversee on-site event execution when needed.

Substack offers a competitive compensation package. The salary range for this role is £85k-£90k, with final offers based on experience and expertise.

Substack is an equal opportunity employer. All applicants will be considered for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity or transgender status), age, national origin, veteran or disability status. We’re seeking people passionate about enabling independent expression and building a better business model for creators. If you want to see what media, communities, and content can become when unmoored from advertising models, and you have the skills and experience to contribute, we’d love to meet you.
