Connect with a career that matters, and help us build a safer future.
Department OverviewCRFS, a Motorola Solutions company, is a global pioneer in advanced radio frequency (RF) technology, specializing in cutting-edge spectrum monitoring, geolocation, and electronic warfare solutions. Headquartered in Cambridge, UK, we design and build high-performance hardware and software—such as our industry-leading RFeye ecosystem—that empowers military forces, national security agencies, and spectrum regulators to detect, analyze, and exploit RF signals in the world's most complex environments. When you join our team, you’re directly contributing to the technologies that ensure spectrum dominance, protect critical infrastructure, and safeguard global communications.
CRFS is seeking a highly capable and practical Test and Validation Engineer (RF Systems) to lead and support the verification and validation of RF systems through prototype, development, and New Product Introduction (NPI).
This role sits within the Systems Engineering team and works closely with Senior Systems Engineers, Hardware, RF, Embedded Software, Applications Software, Mechanical Design, Production, and Project Engineering teams to ensure systems are tested appropriately, risks are retired early, and products are released with the right level of confidence.
The Test and Validation Engineer is responsible for defining and executing system-level test and validation activities in both lab and field environments. The role must balance structured V-model verification practice with rapid fail-fast prototype testing, ensuring that testing supports delivery rather than becoming a late-stage gate or bottleneck.
This role is not limited to hardware test. It covers the end-to-end system, including hardware, software, RF, mechanical integration, environmental performance, and production readiness.
Job Description
Verification and Validation Strategy:
- Develop and execute test plans for hardware components and systems. Define and maintain system-level verification and validation plans for RF systems across development programmes.
- Work with Senior Systems Engineers and project teams to ensure validation activities are considered early in development and aligned with system requirements.
- Support a V-model approach, ensuring requirements, interfaces, and acceptance criteria are traceable to appropriate verification activities.
- Apply a risk-based approach to test planning, balancing rigour with delivery speed.
Prototype and Development Testing:
- Plan and execute test activities for prototype and development systems in lab and field environments.
- Support rapid prototype iterations by identifying issues early, capturing evidence clearly, and feeding results back into design decisions.
- Conduct functional, performance, stress, integration, and system-level testing as appropriate to the maturity and intent of the design.
- Support fault-finding and root cause investigation across hardware, RF, mechanical, embedded, and applications domains.
System Integration and Validation:
- Validate complete systems to ensure that integrated hardware, RF, software, and mechanical elements perform as intended.
- Work closely with system pod leads to confirm system readiness at key development stages.
- Identify emergent system-level issues that are not visible within individual disciplines.
Test Infrastructure, Tooling, and Repeatability:
- Develop, improve, and maintain test methods, test rigs, fixtures, and procedures to support repeatable and efficient validation.
- Work with the wider engineering team to ensure rigs, setups, and workshop/test resources are fit for purpose and well maintained.
- Improve the repeatability and efficiency of testing through better setup control, data capture, and automation where appropriate.
- Support development of production test concepts where relevant.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Produce clear and proportionate test documentation, including test plans, procedures, reports, defect records, and readiness evidence.
- Ensure test evidence is suitable to support technical reviews, validation sign-off, NPI handover, and engineering changes.
- Communicate findings clearly to engineering teams and stakeholders, including risks, limitations, and recommended next actions.
NPI, ECR, and Ongoing Product Support:
- Support New Product Introduction by confirming that validation evidence is sufficient for production handover.
- Assist with validation of design updates, engineering change requests, and product variants.
- Help maintain confidence in released systems by supporting regression and impact testing where needed.
- Provide practical support to one-off customer or internal projects when validation activity is required.
Continuous Improvement:
- Contribute to the development of better validation practices, templates, and standards within Systems Engineering.
- Help improve how CRFS balances fast learning through prototyping with robust evidence for release.
- Stay current with relevant test methods, RF measurement practice, and industry standards.
Basic Requirements
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Systems Engineering, or a related field.
- Equivalent practical experience in a relevant test, validation, or systems role will also be considered.
- A master’s degree is advantageous but not essential.
Experience:
- Experience in test, validation, systems test, or integration of RF or electronics-based systems.
- Experience working in a multidisciplinary engineering environment involving hardware and software integration.
- Experience planning and executing lab and/or field-based test activities.
- Experience troubleshooting complex technical issues using structured investigation methods.
- Experience supporting prototype, development, or NPI-stage products is highly desirable.
- Experience with environmental, EMC, MIL-STD, DEF-STAN, or similar qualification activity is advantageous.
Skills:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to plan testing pragmatically and proportionately to risk and design maturity.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a highly collaborative team.
- Good judgement in balancing delivery pace with verification confidence
Technical Proficiency:
- Experience using diagnostic and measurement equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, spectrum analysers, signal generators, and related lab instrumentation.
- Familiarity with RF testing and measurement techniques.
- Understanding of hardware/software/system integration issues.
- Familiarity with scripting or programming for test automation, data logging, or analysis (e.g. Python) is desirable.
- Familiarity with embedded systems, firmware interaction, or applications-level behaviour is desirable.
- Awareness of relevant standards and engineering practices (e.g. IEEE, ISO, MIL-STD, DEF-STAN).
Personal Attributes:
- Practical, methodical, and evidence-driven.
- Comfortable working on imperfect prototypes as well as more mature systems.
- Able to identify what must be tested thoroughly and what can be tested pragmatically.
- Strong attention to detail without becoming process-heavy.
- Comfortable working across multiple projects and shifting priorities.
- Confident engaging with engineers across multiple disciplines.
