We’re Finding Better Ways to provide materials the world needs, now and in the future.  Our values – care, courage and curiosity – guide how we work and how we treat each other.

About the role

We are looking for a highly commercial tax professional who has demonstrated experience in leading the tax support of multi-jurisdictional projects and transactions, including M&A.

This is a great opportunity for someone who is delivery-driven with deep tax technical expertise, strong judgement and commercial acumen and a pragmatic mindset.  This means being able to operate effectively both in the detail and at a strategic level.

The role does not have any direct reports but will build project teams comprising both local tax team members and advisors.  An ability to mobilize, co-ordinate and lead project teams will be key.

Reporting to the General Manager, Tax – Global Advisory, you will:

  • Lead the tax workstream for complex, multi-jurisdictional transactions, restructures and strategic projects, including M&A.

  • Provide clear, commercially grounded tax advice across the full project lifecycle and support timely decision-making by senior stakeholders.

  • Assess and articulate the tax implications of transaction structures, financing arrangements, post-deal integration steps and cross-border operating models in a way that is practical and decision-useful.

  • Mobilise and lead project teams drawn from local tax teams, other Group Tax specialists and external advisers, ensuring the right expertise is brought in at the right time.

  • Identify, assess and communicate key tax risks arising from projects, transactions and business initiatives, ensuring these are understood early and managed appropriately.

  • Ensure advice and recommended approaches are aligned with Rio Tinto's tax principles, governance requirements and broader policy framework.

  • Build trusted relationships with senior stakeholders across Tax, Finance, Legal, Business Development and the broader business, becoming a go-to adviser on major initiatives and transactions.

  • Manage external advisers effectively — defining scope, directing inputs and challenging advice where needed to ensure high-quality, timely and commercially relevant support.

  • Work with external advisers and internal specialists to gather input efficiently, challenge assumptions and build robust positions on complex matters.

About you

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team

  • 10+ years' experience in a professional services firm and/or multinational in-house tax environment, including substantial exposure to complex transactions, strategic projects and M&A activity.

  • Deep technical tax expertise, strong commercial acumen and a business-partnering mindset, with the ability to translate complex cross-border issues into clear, practical advice that supports better business decisions.

  • Demonstrated experience leading tax support for multi-jurisdictional projects and transactions, including shaping options, identifying and prioritising material tax considerations, and supporting decision-making through the full project lifecycle.

  • Strong business partnering and stakeholder leadership skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships, influence senior stakeholders and co-ordinate internal specialists, regional teams and external advisers to deliver high-quality outcomes.

  • A pragmatic, delivery-focused and risk-based approach, with the ability to work at pace, manage competing priorities and apply sound judgement on when to escalate, where to focus effort and how to work to  governance requirements while delivering commercial outcomes in a large, matrixed or global organisation.

  • Experience in the resources, mining, energy or other capital-intensive multinational sector is desirable.
