 THE ROLE

Reporting to the Deputy Director, you will operate in a fast-paced auction environment, supporting the day-to-day management of goods moving under Sotheby’s customs reliefs regimes. This entry-level role is primarily focused on customs operations, with opportunities to contribute to broader tax projects and initiatives.

This is an operational position requiring accuracy, strong attention to detail, good analytical skills, and a proactive approach to problem-solving. You will be responsible for customs processing, record-keeping, and ensuring compliance throughout the lifecycle of goods admitted into the UK under customs regimes (for example, Temporary Admission). The role involves close collaboration with Sotheby’s commercial and operations teams.

Previous customs experience would be advantageous but is not essential as training will be provided on the job. We are looking for a motivated self-starter who learns quickly, is comfortable working with data, and has strong Excel and analytical skills.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to develop a career in tax and customs while gaining experience in a high-value, deadline-driven environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The management of goods imported into the UK includes the following responsibilities:

  • Preparing and submitting customs declarations under the supervision of the Tax Analyst.
  • Maintaining accurate customs records, ensuring data captured in internal systems aligns with submitted declarations.
  • Monitoring Temporary Admission deadlines, proactively escalating upcoming time limits to senior team members and liaising with internal stakeholders (Operations, Logistics, Client Services, and Specialists) to obtain required information.
  • Coordinating with clients’ freight forwarders, customs brokers, and warehouse partners in relation to movements and clearances.
  • Responding to routine internal queries regarding customs status, documentation, and requirements.
  • Supporting the review and ongoing improvement of customs compliance procedures, processes, and documentation

The role will also involve contributing to broader tax projects:

  • Supporting the Deputy Director in managing Sotheby’s overseas VAT compliance obligations, including liaising with external advisers, extracting and analysing data, and assisting with the preparation and submission of VAT returns.
  • Conducting research and providing analytical support on tax and customs matters to support the Tax Director.
  • Assisting with ad hoc projects across the Group Tax function as they arise.

This broader exposure will provide valuable insight into both indirect tax compliance and wider tax operations within an international business environment.

IDEAL EXPERIENCE & COMPETENCIES

  • A strong interest in developing a career in tax and customs.
  • Previous experience in data analytics, customs operations, logistics, freight forwarding, or trade compliance is advantageous but not essential.
  • Strong analytical and data-handling skills, with the ability to interpret large datasets, identify trends, and draw practical conclusions.
  • Excellent organisational skills including ability to multi-task and prioritise.
  • Clear and professional communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail, particularly when working with data and regulatory documentation.
  • A proactive and curious mindset, with the ability to learn quickly and solve problems independently.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Strong IT skills, including advanced Excel capabilities (data analysis, lookups, pivot tables and reporting). Experience with ERP systems, or customs platforms (SAP and GTS) would be beneficial.
