Senior Product Manager II - Content (Elsevier AI Products)
About Role:
The Senior Product Manager II (Content) owns the content portfolio domain for Elsevier’s AI products. You will source, select, and shape the forward-looking content portfolio – with an emphasis on non-journal sources (preprints, clinical trials, methods/protocols, gray literature, datasets/databases) – to maximize user value and competitive differentiation. You’ll define content-level requirements, build clear value cases, and drive end-to-end delivery with Engineering and Platform teams so that high-quality, license-aware content becomes a durable product advantage. This role represents the domain with executives, partners, and cross-functional teams, and is a focal point for customer/market understanding.
Responsibilities
Domain leadership and strategy
- Own the content portfolio strategy for non-journal sources across Elsevier AI products; create a multi-year roadmap aligned to business outcomes.
- Build value cases for new sources and formats (e.g., trials, methods, databases, OA/gray literature), including clearly defined lead use cases for each source, ROI, risk, compliance, and implementation complexity.
- Define KPIs and success metrics (e.g., portfolio coverage vs targets, incremental feature impact, cost-per-usable-document, time-to-availability).
Customer, market and competitive insight
- Maintain a market map of priority domains/sources; run gap analysis vs. competitor content bases and user needs.
- Conduct discovery with researchers, clinicians, and enterprise buyers to specify high-value use cases (e.g., figures/tables, methods-as-data, trust/provenance).
Requirements and PRDs
- Write clear Content PRDs with Definition of Ready/Done for ingestion, normalization, enrichment, indexing, entitlement, and delivery.
- Specify content-level requirements (granularity, figures/tables, captions, provenance, trust signals, update cadence, multilingual, accessibility) and acceptance tests.
- Partner with Data Acquisition on cost/benefit analysis, budgeting, usage rights and operationalization.
Delivery and lifecycle management
- Prioritize epics and stories with the RDP/SAIP platform teams and Product/UX; ensure delivery to spec and milestone.
- Work with Engineering and Data Science to design evaluation and trust signals that improve retrieval, grounding, and user-perceived quality.
- Drive de-risking pilots and alpha/beta programs; recommend release/retire decisions based on evidence.
Go-to-market and partner engagement
- Collaborate with AI Product teams on source onboarding priorities and co-marketing stories that demonstrate researcher benefit.
- Contribute to positioning, pricing/packaging (where applicable), and field enablement for content-powered features and APIs.
Leadership and ways of working
- Mentor PMs/analysts informally; model crisp writing, storytelling with data, and calm, inclusive facilitation.
- Represent the domain in exec reviews and with external partners; communicate trade-offs and decisions transparently.
- Build and maintain relationships across the entire company to establish the Content Strategy and Partnerships team and RDP as the Elsevier Data Platform.
Requirements:
- 8–10+ years in product management (or equivalent content/portfolio product roles) delivering data/content platforms, search/knowledge products, or AI/ML-powered experiences.
- Proven portfolio ownership: market mapping, gap analysis, business casing, and shipping content-backed features end-to-end.
- Fluency in content and metadata (XML/JSON, identifiers, provenance, ontologies/semantics) and how they flow through ingestion → enrichment → indexing → entitlement.
- Comfortable partnering with Legal/Finance on licensing constructs (entitlements, excerpt/snippet limits, revenue share/royalties).
- Analytical strength: define KPIs, interrogate dashboards (Tableau/Power BI), reason through imperfect data; SQL or notebooks a plus.
- Excellent communication (clear PRDs, crisp narratives) and facilitation across Engineering, Data Science, UX, Partnerships, and external publishers.
Preferred Qualifications
- Background in STM publishing, life sciences, clinical or research information; exposure to preprints, trials registries, methods/protocol repositories, OA aggregators, or scientific databases.
- Experience with retrieval-augmented generation, evaluation frameworks, and trust/safety/provenance patterns for AI answers.
- Familiarity with search/indexing pipelines, quality signals, relevance metrics, and experimentation (A/B, interleaving).
- Hands-on with Jira/Confluence, CRM workflows (e.g., Salesforce) and collaboration tools; comfort presenting to executives and external partners.
- Advanced degree in a technical or scientific field (MS/PhD) or MBA is a plus.
What success looks like (first 12 months)
- A prioritized, evidence-backed portfolio plan for non-journal sources, with 2 - 3 horizon pilots (e.g., trials, methods, databases) progressing to release.
- Coverage vs. target improved materially; time-to-availability down; measurable feature impact from new sources (e.g., CTR lift, answer quality/trust).
- Content PRDs and acceptance gates used consistently by platform and product teams; reduced rework and clearer accountability lines.
- Clear value stories (internal and partner-facing) that showcase Elsevier’s content advantage in AI surfaces and APIs.
