Summary:
Enterprise leader, reporting to the VP, Enterprise Risk Management, responsible for advancing enterprise risk tooling and methodologies to drive the ongoing maturation of Northwestern Mutual's enterprise risk management operating model. Leads the development, implementation, adoption, management, and oversight for enterprise risk tooling strategy, working cross-functionally to drive enterprise alignment.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development, implementation, adoption, management, and oversight of enterprise-level governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) tooling, including defining and coordinating the prioritization of use cases, such as enterprise risk register, enterprise risk assessment, enterprise issues management, policies and controls, and exceptions management.
  • Develop strategy, implement, and lead the governance of, an enterprise risk common data model, to ensure that risk data across the ecosystem is consistent and able to be aggregated effectively, including defining and governing needed data sources and integrations, in each case to enable enterprise GRC use cases, aligning with enterprise partners, including Technology & Digital function and risk partners.
  • Define and establish dashboards and reporting to communicate outputs from enterprise GRC use cases at appropriate levels of the organization (including Board and senior executive).
  • Develop and implement an enterprise risk issues management strategy.
  • Establish and lead centralized coordination and governance structure for enterprise GRC program, collaborating with risk stakeholders across the enterprise to drive process improvements, efficiencies and necessary change management.
  • Align with VP, Enterprise Risk Management and VP, Chief Risk Officer on objectives and key results for the enterprise GRC roadmap, establish and manage to appropriate project metrics, proactively identifying and addressing project risks.
  • Support other Enterprise Risk Transformation initiatives in coordination with the Enterprise Risk Management & Resiliency (ERMR) leadership team.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in Risk Management, Finance, Operations, Engineering, or a relevant area, plus 10 years+ of broad business experience involving Risk Management, or other related functions.
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressive, applicable leadership experience.
  • Substantial experience leading implementation of GRC or similar cross-functional process and technology capabilities.

  • Innovation / Transformation: Must be able to operate effectively within, and contribute to, a culture of innovation. Ability to think creatively and identify opportunities to redesign existing processes and/or develop new processes to facilitate transformation within ERMR and the Company.
  • Dealing with Ambiguity: Ability to effectively cope with constant change demonstrated by specific techniques to redirect own efforts and efforts of others. Includes the ability to help others efficiently cope with change and minimize the emotional impact.
  • Problem Solving: Demonstrated knowledge of and practical application of multiple problem-solving tools (including a total systems approach) addressing complex and unique problems. Established history of solving problems with effective solutions. Ability and determination to communicate difficult risk information and other situations to all levels of company management.
  • Leadership & Communications: Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, including excellent decision making, consultation, negotiation, influence (including horizontally and across all levels of the organization), and communication (written and verbal, with ability to present effectively to a variety of audiences), with the NM enterprise savvy to navigate, influence and inform multiple key internal stakeholders.
  • Advisor: Trusted advisor and builder of strong, collaborative relationships with key business and risk partners to align and deliver on cross functional, enterprise solutions.
  • Enterprise Acumen: Strong finance, planning, strategy, and operations skills, including the ability to understand how initiatives drive business outcomes and drive work through the processes and procedures within NM to ensure leadership buy-in and execution quality.

Pay Range - Start:
$112,210.00
Pay Range - End:
$208,390.00
Northwestern Mutual pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement in the salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. At Northwestern Mutual, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. Positions in certain locations (such as California) may provide an increase on the standard pay structure based on the location.
