At Speechmatics, we are seeking a Junior Software Engineer to develop new product features that support our high-scale, low latency, AI-driven services, in both a collaborative and supportive team. As pioneers in speech technology, our mission is to Understand Every Voice—a vision that has propelled us to create Flow, our revolutionary new Conversational AI platform. As a Junior Software Engineer, you will work in our ambitious SaaS Features team who manage the backend software stack of our SaaS product. Ideally, you will have some experience in Python (or Go), but many of our most successful hires learnt on the job- and you will have the continuous support of a buddy/mentor throughout your journey. We encourage versatility and knowledge transfer across teams, and will be looking for highly collaborative individuals. You will also care deeply about the quality of your work and be passionate about providing customers with a reliable experience.

What you'll be doing:

  • Working on our distributed systems and SaaS backend business logic components.
  • Implementing high quality and reliable APIs to expose our AI services.
  • Ensuring our machine learning inference tier is highly scalable and efficient.
  • Improving the performance of our systems through deep analysis and observability tooling.
  • Writing internal tooling that improves the speed at which we get features into production, safely.
  • Proactively monitoring production environments to find customer issues.
  • Designing and implementing architectural improvements to reliability, availability, latency, performance and efficiency in collaboration with other teams.
  • Open to working with our tech stack: Python, Go, Containers, Kubernetes, REST, Websockets, Postgres, Redis, Elastic, Kafka, GPU compute, cloud infrastructure.

Who we're looking for:

  • You have some software engineering experience, programming in languages like Python or Go, either through projects, coursework, or personal learning.
  • You’re open to learning about writing reliable, maintainable code and understand the basics of testing your code to make sure it works as expected.
  • You have an interest in how software systems work together and how to make them reliable, even if you’re still learning the details.
  • You have a proactive attitude and want to learn how to anticipate and fix issues before they become larger problems.
  • You have a general understanding of components that support software applications, such as operating systems, networks, databases, and cloud services, or are eager to learn about them.
  • You’re willing to document your work and processes, so that you and others can follow and build upon them.
  • You enjoy exploring new topics deeply when needed and are excited to learn on the job.
  • You are an excellent communicator and thrive in a collaborative, team environment.
