Every day, thousands of businesses around the world struggle with slow, confusing verification processes that delay their access to essential financial services. By joining our team, you'll directly impact these businesses by transforming a traditionally frustrating experience into one that's fast, intuitive, and fair. Your code will help small businesses access global banking faster, enable entrepreneurs to pay international employees on time, and allow growing companies to expand across borders without friction. Team you will be working with: You'll join our Business Onboarding Verification team – a diverse, cross-functional group passionate about solving complex problems with elegant solutions. We bring together backend and frontend engineers, mobile developers, designers, data analysts, and product managers who collaborate closely to deliver exceptional customer experiences. Our team is responsible for the critical verification journey that business customers complete before using Wise's products. We own the entire verification lifecycle – from document collection flows and automated review systems to agent tooling and compliance monitoring. We operate with high autonomy, make data-driven decisions, and celebrate both technical excellence and customer impact. As a team that touches both regulatory requirements and customer experience, we have unique opportunities to innovate in a space traditionally resistant to change.
QualificationsAs a Backend Engineer, you'll play a crucial role in the Business Onboarding Verification team, contributing to the development and maintenance of scalable systems that enhance our verification platform. You'll work on engineering challenges, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and help deliver solutions that make verification faster, more accurate, and more customer-friendly.
What You'll Do:
Develop and maintain high-performance, scalable backend services using Java, Spring Boot, and cloud technologies.
Collaborate with product managers and designers to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
Engage in code reviews and provide constructive feedback to peers.
Assist in building internal tools that help our verification agents work efficiently to verify customers.
Participate in knowledge sharing and promote best practices within the team.
What We're Looking For:
1-3 years of experience building backend systems.
Experience working with databases (primarily SQL).
Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Decent system design skills with experience in building distributed services.

What do we offer:
Starting salary: Base salary of £65000 - £85000 + RSU
