Position Overview
The SVP Engineering is a strategic leadership role reporting to the Chief Product & Technology Officer. The position is based in Edinburgh or London.
You will:
Lead Wood Mackenzie’s global technology organization—responsible for engineering excellence, platform scalability, and innovation across the entire product and data ecosystem.
Build and operate the modern technology backbone that powers the company’s data, AI, and workflow applications. Drive continuous improvement in software quality, reliability, and speed of execution by leveraging automation, modern data architectures, and agentic AI to transform how we build, operate, and evolve digital products.
Externally, act as a strategic technology partner to our clients, helping them advance their own AI transformation journeys through collaboration, platform integrations, and co-innovation initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Role model strong integrity and WoodMac’s values and behaviours. Lead a high-performing global engineering organization of 350+ professionals. Foster an inclusive, engaged team culture that attracts, retains, and develops top engineering talent
- Define and execute the global engineering strategy aligned with Wood Mackenzie's business objectives, driving innovation in data analytics, energy intelligence platforms, and enterprise solutions across energy, renewables, and commodities sectors
- Oversee the end-to-end software development lifecycle, ensuring delivery of scalable, secure, and reliable platforms that serve Wood Mackenzie's clients
- Drive technology modernization and architectural transformation, migrating legacy systems to cloud-native architectures while maintaining business continuity and data integrity
- Establish and maintain engineering standards, best practices, and governance frameworks including DevOps, CI/CD, security, quality assurance, and technical debt management
- Partner with Product, Data Science, and Commercial teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions and ensure seamless delivery of customer-facing products and services
- Own the engineering budget and resource allocation, optimizing investments across infrastructure, tooling, talent acquisition, and third-party services to maximize ROI
- Build strategic technology partnerships and vendor relationships, evaluating emerging technologies and tools to maintain Wood Mackenzie's competitive advantage in the energy intelligence market
- Champion diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within engineering, implementing programs to attract, retain, and develop diverse technical talent globally
- Serve as a key member of the technology leadership team, and provide technical expertise to the GE and Board on progress, change and technology risk management.

- We are a hybrid working company and the successful applicant will be expected to be physically present in the office at least 2 days per week to foster and contribute to a collaborative environment, but this may be subject to change in the future.

Person Specification
- A dynamic, high energy leader with experience of leading large, global functions.
- 15+ years of progressive software engineering experience with at least 8 years in senior leadership roles (VP, SVP, or CTO level) managing large-scale global engineering teams of 200+ people
- Proven track record of building and scaling engineering organizations in high-growth technology companies, preferably in SaaS, data analytics, energy tech, or enterprise software environments
- Deep technical expertise across modern software architecture, including cloud platforms , microservices, APIs, data engineering, and distributed systems at enterprise scale
- Qualifications in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field required; a strong foundation in software engineering principles and computer science fundamentals
- Experience managing geographically distributed teams across multiple time zones, with proven ability to build cohesive engineering cultures, drive alignment, and deliver results in a global operating model
- Executive presence and communication skills with experience presenting to C-suite, Board of Directors, and external stakeholders, plus a track record of successful cross-functional collaboration with Product, Data Science, Commercial, and Operations teams
- Intellectual curiosity and desire to understand and explain our business to internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to synthesize complex issues into easily understood key drivers.
